Well, the season is almost done, the ice is melting like crazy, but at least the wind is drying it up just as fast down here. I decided to try a different lake today near home, took along the fishfinder to check things out. I knew there was a deep trench in this lake, deep for around here anyways, and today I managed to figure out where it is. Saw some fish around the 6 foot mark, probably whites Im thinking, since I didnt manage to catch any to verify that fact Also saw a school go by right off the bottom a couple times, either perch or walleyes, but again, no way to confirm that. I also tried a couple shallower areas, 10 and 12 feet. No fish there either, altho the guy not far away managed a barely legal pike. I decided to move to another nearby lake (so many lakes so little winter) and managed to ice one pike while going slowly deaf listening to the never ending honking of the geese playing on the ice. Im pretty sure its the same fish I caught there yesterday, even the same hole, and had fresh hook marks on it too. At least I didnt have to drive to Enchant to break the skunk Got lucky and saw a snowy owl who was nice enough to let me get a few pics this time also, another bonus .
The ice on both lakes was going soft fast, one was almost 3 feet thick and the other a lot thinner. Any object frozen in the ice was gathering heat and melting the surrounding area fast. At a couple discarded campfires :mad3: the ice was already melted down 6 or 7 inches by 4 oclock, so Id advise not driving anywhere near them if you are crazy/brave enough to still drive on.
