Any one know whats the condition of Bearspaw dam? Is it iced over? or is there open water? I ask because at the end of march the bow (from bearspaw to WHD will be closed for 2 months) will be off limits for me as I dont drive and live in bowness and want some place close to fish. Any info would be great.

Below the dam is open. I went down a few weeks ago and pulled out some whitefish. As for the top part, Not quite sure, BUT the top is open all year. Its just below that closes. But yeah, the bottom part there's barley any ice. Last time I was down there a few weeks ago.

I was there with the dog last night. Below the dam is all open water. Above the dam is all ice, but the ice doesn't look very good and I wouldn't walk on it, especially near the dam or spillway. It's probably a foot or two thick, but with the flowing water and varying dam depths I don't like that ice.

South of the dam is pretty open... there's a few nice holes that look good.

And the dam? Well, I think it's pretty sketchy ice myself.

I took these photos this evening out walking the puppy.

If you look closely near the top of the bay of ice and open water there's an indent in the ice. That's where our dumb dog fell in last night :mad3: (beside the big stick on the ice I used to fish her out). Watch out for the ice!

Didn't catch a damn thing but it was pretty dark by the time we hiked to the dam but at least it was a nice evening to be outside. Met a guy fishing the hole at the dam and he said he managed one nice brown.

Incidentally, that very same bay is where I caught a nice burb about 20 years ago just after ice out :D

the top of the dam on bearspaw reservior has open water but only right up against the dam. but with the regs saying anglers can't fish within 25 yards (page 19 of the new regs) or somthing like that at man made structures i don't know how close you can get to the open water that would be sufficient.

 Hope she wasn't too cold. Was out there tonight and saw the stick. The ice has receded to about half of what's in the photo; kinda like my hair after a year of marriage. But still there was a guy icefishing futher in on the ice. Ice can't be more than 20 feet from the shore. Musta been using bait cuz I showed up on the lower point of the bay and a couple showed up on the upper point and he scooted quickly with no fish I can attest. I tried everything and I mean everything. Nothing. Nobody else had as much as a bite either. Was a nice evening nevertheless. :)

I tried that bay yesterday morning, nothing doing (spinning gear). There was something jumping to feed though; drove me nuts trying to catch em.

This is one of my fav spots to fish, Ive caught nice rainbows and seen people catch some nice whites and pike out of that calm pool. I was just there on Sunday but didnt get a nibble.
