Does anybody know if the ice on Yellowhead and Birch near Caroline is still safe to walk on? I'm hoping to get out for a fish tomorrow.

I'm out at birch right now. Fishing is slow but there is 2 feet of ice still. One guy drove his truck on.

Roads were good, company was good, fishing was sloooow. 1 fish and a few more misses between 3 of us. Nice lake though, can't wait to try with a fly rod.

I don't think your rubber boots are going to get you out far enough to cast your fly rod when the ice comes off :lol::lol:

Maybe not, but I bought a luxurious 12' aluminum boat that might!

The road into Birch lake after you turn off the main road is mostly good. There are a few muddy sections that are not too bad and can even be negotiated with a car. But once you get to where the turn off is to the lake it's 4X4 only. We got in and out with no problem. But the ruts are deep. Even the gravel parking area was muddy as heck by the time we left later in the day.

As far as ice the ice around the north edge was starting to melt. We had to step onto a log and onto thicker ice to get on. Once on we drilled some holes. The ice is still 2 feet thick. In fact someone was driving on the lake with a truck. He got on from the west entrance. We drove up the west entrance later to see what it looked like. Some big mud holes on the road in on the west side.
