Carburn isn't listed in either ES1 or PP1, so provincial regulations apply, it's open year round but I dont think it has thawed yet....
C. For other ES1 Lakes, Reservoirs and Ponds not included under (A) or (B) and for fish species not mentioned at a listed lake.
Open all year – Trout limit 5; Mountain Whitefish limit 5 over 30 cm; (where present, Walleye limit 3 over 50 cm; Pike limit 3 [no size limit]; Perch limit 15; Lake Whitefish limit 10; Burbot limit 10); Bait, except bait fish, allowed.

What would you catch there, and in main pond or the pond right by the river.

Perch in the main pond in summer seem to like dew worms quite a bit, have yet to catch a pike out of there though..

We used to catch tons of pike down there about 15 years ago. Always had the best luck with orange rapalas. All just hammer handles though. I think I will give it a shot this year for old times sake....... before the weeds get to bad.

I drive by there everyday on my way to work and its still got ice and should be ice free in the next week or so if the weather stays warm. I fish there quite a bit and there is pike and perch in both the main pond in the center and the one closest to the glenmore bridge. I have caught pike and seen perch in the main pond and caught just pike out of the end one. I am going to try for pike right after the ice melts and for perch later on in June.

Last year in August I had a lot of nice catches in there. In the largest pond closest to Glenmore bridge I caught a lot of small pike fishing in the weedy areas. I caught a large brown near the little stream connecting it to the bow as well.

In the main pond I caught a decent sized pike and tons of small perch. Here is the pike I caught in there. I released it so he is probably still lurking in there.

Still iced over. Just remember guys its a real small pond and could be fished out in days. This is 100% the perfect place to practice C&R. I like to slip out there for some hard water its real close and provides a great day with minimal effort and time. I have seen the fish grow in size and numbers over the past few years and sure hope to be seeing the same next year. Again please practice C&R on the pond.

How agresive are the perch in that pond??? I'd like to try catching some with micro crankbaits and other little lures...C&R is the only way to go within city limits!

You would need a real small crank bait. They Perch population is healthy but small. This pond is at that point where it is just on the verge of becoming a healthy fishery. If left to grow it will be a wicked little spot to take the kids or just go and enjoy an afternoon. It will become so weedy soon that it is almost impossible to fish with anything other than top water baits or rigs under a indicator out in the depths. How ever I think that I may try for a pike or two this summer out there on the fly rod.

I live right next to the park.

First small pond is ice free.

Last night at 1900 the (second) large pond was about 1/3 thawed out, free water at the East end, along the north shore about 50 ft and around the west end. South side still frozen, but very thin ice.

Third pond by Glenmore is ice free.

I've been keeping track because I'm putting my new kayak in the water as soon as the sun is warmed up a bit and the wind dies down. That way when (not if) I fall in at least I have a chance of surviving the walk home.

Once I have a grip on the kayak operation I plan to troll/fly cast for pike.

See you on the water.

1434 hrs Friday. The Carburn park ponds are ice free!

Just came back from 2 hours peddling my kayak around the first and second ponds.

Few guys out fishing, nothing caught while I was there.

As I was drifting I saw two good sized (5+ lbs) pike cruising the shallows at the West end of the second (largest) pond.

Will have to go back with my fishing pole next time.

Good luck with the fishing.

Anyone fished the open water yet? Thinking on taking my mom out (as shes not a fan of the river)?

What kind of bait rigs work at this time of year?

Is there still ice in carburn this year or is it ice-off? Might go next week if the ice is off. Any tips on catching some pike there this year? Thanks :character0053:

yada, went there today with family and there was no ice in the 1st pond. Theres was some ice voering about half the of the 2nd pond though. Didn't check the 3rd. Didn't have enought time. And by the way, saw some dead pike about 3-5 pounds each. I saw at least 5 I think. Might've been winter killed or something. Water temp. wasn't really cold either. DOn't know why they died.

Just got back, saw about 100-150 dead perch and pike in the middle pond-partial winterkill. Some nice perch and like you said a few half decent pike. More reason to practice C&R there.

so do you think that the city of calgary will re-stock the fish? Because I don't think that theres not a lot of fish left in the ponds. And if you did go to the 3rd pond, was it ice-off and did u catch something or just saw more dead fish?

Not all perch, though there were some I was really surprised with the size. At first I just noticed the ones washed on shore but once I started looking at the bottom of the pond is was littered with pike and perch. Not sure if it was totally killed - Someone in this thread said they saw a 5lber cruising in the shallows so maybe some made it. Too bad because it was a really nice place to take the kids and close. Anybody know about partial winter kills, what makes the difference on what lives and what doesn't?

I did go to the third pond - ice free and no dead fish.

Daceminnow

its not on the regulations..

sure it is pal. you just need to learn how to read them. see the highlighted portion below.

ES1 Site-Specific Regulations
The names of most lakes and major streams appear alphabetically under “ES1 Lake and Stream Listings.” Smaller streams often are not listed, but may be included in regulations as tributaries to lakes or larger streams.

LAKES

A. For Trout-Stocked Lakes, Reservoirs and Ponds in ES1 that are named under “Alberta’s Fish Stocking Program.”
Open all year – Trout limit 5; bait, except bait fish, allowed.

B. For Lakes, Reservoirs and Ponds listed and fish species listed under “ES1 Lake and Stream Listings” starting on this page.
You must follow the regulations stated with each listing.

I met the wildlife officer in the photo, real nice guy. He patrols glenmore every once in a while.

I'd bet money this isn't the first time this happened at carburn. I doubt all of them are dead, because there'd be alot more than 150 of them little buggers dead if they did. That place was packed with perch and pike. Saw some freakishly big pike come out of there before, had some big ones on my line too.

btw, some of you saying to practice catch and release. It's a good idea there anyways, because back in the day they were spraying some kind of pesticide on the grass over there along the bike path. So, if you wanna eat em, go for it. Enjoy your cancer.

Unfortunate winter kill there, seems quite sizable to me......And it sucks because it was a place I'd go for perch that was easy to get to....hopefully it's not completely killed off but could take a few years to recuperate if there's any fish left.

Was at carburn today for a few hours today. Not a nibble but my friend did snag a dead rotten fish off bottom so winter kill seems very likely. That sucks as that place is close and usually always produces a fish or two.
