Hey all I've been tying lots of pike flies lately. Gotta get ready for spring fly fishing for Mr. Piker. Got one more styrofoam block chock full also. That's getting shipped out this week. To those that have asked for flies. Most of them are done now, and will be shipped out this week. I'll be tying for the next month or so. Thought I was running out of hooks today, until I found another pack of hooks in my tying box tonight.

First angle of pike flies

Second angle of same flies. As you can see by the pictures I have been going with a red head theme. Pike seem to key in on the eyes and on red. So I figure why not give them what they want. Big googly eyes and red heads.

One of my pike boxes. It is an old video tape box with foam in it.

The flies were kind of crammed. So I took a few out to show you what they look like.

So what have you been tying for pike flies these days? Show us what you got.

Cheers,
Rob

Well, here are a couple of flies that I've tied up for a forum member. The other stuff I've been tying can be found in a different thread (Wayne's "Flying Pike" thread).

Double Bunny Flies (Rabbit Zonkers with Flashabou)

Prince of Pike Flies (Synthetic Hair, Krystal Flash, and Icelandic Sheep Hair)
These ones will be pretty easy casting as they won't retain much water, and they'll be good in weeds :) The length of the fly was dictated by the length of the material.

Wow. My floor looks dirty in those pics. It isn't. The finish is worn on the cheap (free) laminate :D

Yes Cat some of those are in fact your flies. There is another block of foam that I have completely covered with flies for you and others. I will be taking some from both batches for you. Are there any there in those pictures in particular that you'd like to have?

Swish you have a PM coming your way.

Tasty looking flies folks - very purdy. The only pike flies I've tied up are along the lines of this one. Call it the "pink dink"

What materials are you using for the Pink Dink? Synthetics or naturals?

ULTRAlite

synthetics - all I had at the time that I thought might stand up to a toothy critter attack. More for the walleye really, but caught a few pike on em.

I usually use clousers for the walleye. I'll have to grab my box of clousers and post a few of them that worked really well last year for the walleye.

Here's a sample of some of mine, tied them last year and have yet to get out and try them. Hopefully this spring.

Nice, AlbertaAngler. How did you tie the one in the top right corner of the photo? I tried to tie some that were similar . . . but they didn't work so well :o I couldn't get a nice body shape.

It's a little hard to explain but I'll give it a go. I found the technique in one of my fly fishing magazines. You take ez body and cut a chunk off, use a lighter to light melt one of the edges, just so that it stays together and doesn't fray. slide the ez body over the eye unburnt end first so that the burnt edge is still a little over the eye (you can adjust this to suit once you have the basic idea down). tie the unburnt edge to the shaft. fold the burnt edge back over the tied end, it should make a little umbrella type ring. Tie your materials over the "umbrella". The "umbrella" gives body to the fly and gives it a unique motion in the water.

This may be a lot easier way to do it:

Thanks so much :) I have seen those, I just haven't picked any up.

Please be sure to let me know if they work or not . . . pretty only goes so far ;) They should be quite durable, for the most part. Feathers will get munched pretty quickly, but the rabbit and the synthetics will be longer lasting.

Here are a few of mine. Gotta say I don't tie too many pike flies but am hoping to put in a few days targeting pike exclusively this year. Nice job on all the previous ties. Gives me a few more ideas.

I dont flyfish for pike a whole lot but always have a decent stock of flys for the buggers, there fun but I like every other species better, here are my favorite, simple patterns I use for Pike that have never failed me.

I sill have to epoxy the head on this one, then it just looks so much better, has amazing movement in water.

This thread has been very inspiring. Way to get it started, Rob. By the way the strip hasn't arrived yet! I really need to stop tying those drab trout patterns and get the imaginative genes gelling!

Too bad that stuff didn't arrive yet. You can expect it any day now. Let me know when it arrives would you please? Maybe with the next batch I'll send it Express Post. But I didn't want to send this small batch with EP because of the cost.

Yes, John your right about the pike flies being colorfull. I should take another picture of the other one's I have tied. There is the whole color of the rainbow. I like getting creative and coming up with new patterns. I have some that are brand new that I can't wait to try out. The main thing with all the pike flies I find is to make some red near the head. Even if you just use red thread to tie it with. Then when you epoxy the head you get a nice red color right at the front of the fly. I also like using red eyes or a white eye in front of some red flashabou or anglehair.

Mind you there is also an added cost when you start using so many materials. I have spent $250 in the last 2 weeks just on pike fly materials and hooks.

No kidding! Hooks especially are getting just about as expensive as crack, maybe moreso lol. Not to mention dumbells, 3d prism eyes, etc.
