Although I haven't fly fished there yet (going to try this year, just started flying last year) I caught this lunker with my ultralight and a 1/7 ounce blue/silver len thompson. Now before everyone gets after me for this pic listen!

The shore was muddy as hell, didn't wear any rubbers or waders just shoes.
I couldn't get close to the shore. go this guy on shore, took a quick picture and measurement (49.5cm) and tried to send him back. Upon putting him in the water, it was too shallow for him to swim. So I braced myself on a log with one arm so I could tail him out further and off he went. Then as I went to stand up one of my shoes got stuck in the mud and stayed there when I pulled my foot up!!. Sock in mud I pulled my shoe out, go it back on and got back to fishing.
I did the best I could to get him back into the water asap.

He put up a decent little fights, was a real prize for my first rainbow out of Muir. Caught a couple more little guys that day and the next (next day I wore my waders and didn't get as muddy). Just wish the shore wasn't so muddy.

Anyway, lennies work just fine. Couple of guys fly fishing there that day couldn't believe I go three on the same little spoon. I love those blue/silvers!
11 rainbows for me on them last year.

Grab Phil Rowley's book. Fly Patterns For Stillwaters. It is a great book with fantastic information and some great flies in it.

Kingfisher is bang on about Phil's Book. It's a must for any stillwater fly guy.

These are my two top producers at Muir (both fished static under an indicator).

Redd October (midge larva)

Wooly Bugger (black or olive in smaller sizes)
