I'd say that a 5 wt is ok. Maybe a bit on the light side (there are 10lb Walleye in here as well as slough sharks) I have caught Walleye on the fly in there, I used a sink tip with a bunny leach tied onto about 2 ft of spiderwire and swung the fly where gravel bars drop into deeper water in the edmonton area. Good luck to you - if you can find a school you will catch a lot of them this way. Don't be afraid to dead drift it either, some days that is the ticket too, just not quite as much fun.

Might be the only way to catch one soon... there was a movement earlier this year to put a bait ban on the remaining portion of the NSR from Drayton Valley east to the Sask. border... It was fortunatly shut down... this time...:ashamed:

I would use at least a 6wt, I like a 7 for chucking streamers. Had good luck using clousers in black, white or chartruese, but I am sure a leech or bugger would work as well, just make sure you are getting to the bottom or very close to it. If you are going to be using a lighter fly pick up a 7' sink tip, about (3.5 or 5 ips) and a 9' leader, that should get you down there as well.

Hey Uplander a 5wt isn't too light for the walleye. But it certainly is for the flies and lines you will need to chuck. I use a full sink line or at the very least a heavy sink tip. I use an 8wt. I use clousers with good success. Black/white, green/white, Yellow, white and red/white are some of my favorites.

The real key is to get the fly down as soon as you can. As you know walleye hang out on the bottom. Occasionally they will come to the surface. But more often than not they are down at the bottom. So make sure your fly gets down to the zone quickly.

As for leader I use 8 to 12lb florocarbon.
