View Full Version : Your hunting rifle?

Marlin xl7
04-11-2010, 09:30 AM
I'm just curious as to what you guys use for your hunting rifle, or rifles. I use a marlin xl-7 in 270 win, with an older redfield tracker 3-9x40, and sometimes a ruger M77 in 257 roberts.

I use my Rem.700 buckmaster edition, 300 Win Mag mostly. Depending on where I\m going I may take my Winchester 94, 32 sp or BLR 308. This year I'll take my Mosin Nagant out for a try on deer.

I'm currently trying to train myself to use a 300wsm. But all the animals I have ever shot, besides 1 last fall, were with a 303 British peep sight. I think thats my biggest problem with the 300. Trying to get used to using a scope.

For me, it is usually a tougher decision than "Shooter or not?"

It usually ends up being 2 rifles in the truck, and a last minute decision when i am doing final prep at my truck in the morning.

That being said, if I am not in a mood to **** around, just get out and shoot something, I usually reach for my Ruger 77 stainless in 280.

Tikka t3 lite, 30.06, leupold 4.5x14-50, M1 turrets, Duplex reticle. For me i'm using one gun for everything, with the theory of, mastering one gun and one load for deer, elk, moose out to 500yards. The 30.06 spitting 180g bullets in my opinion fits the bill nicely. Lots of bullets and factory ammo, light recoil in my opinion, cheap to reload. I don't need another gun. But i would like more.lol.;)

I use a Browning X-Bolt in .270WSM with a 3-16 Pentax w/ ballistic plex rectical.
My wife shoots a Remington model 7 in 7mm-08 with a elite 3200 scope with firefly rectical.

I have a few more rifles but they tend to stay in the gun safe.

Will be adding a custom built mountain rifle that I hope to have done by possibly this winter.

I keep switching it up. One of 3 Weatherby's usually will be on my shoulder. I want to try my 94, 7-30 Waters this year on deer, with my boys watching as it's really theirs. Just to show them it works. My wife is a one gun gal and shoots a Weatherby also. Hers is 7mmWby. But I have used a lot over the years. When I tire of the bigbore thing I might get just a couple guns and settle down.

Gonna use my marlin 336 this fall as I have a new area to hunt with lot's of bush and hopefully lot's of whitetails.

It's a Tikka .300 Win mag with wood stock and a 4 round detachable magazine.
Except for a couple a times it has knocked over everything i have aimed at.
It is an excellent rifle and very accurate. It has a Leupy FXIII 6x42 on it.

Last season I took my new NEF handi rifle in .243win topped with a BSA catseye 4-14x44mm and took a nice little buck.
Other than that I use my mossberg ATR 100 Night train in .308win with Barska 4-16x50 or my Ruger77 in 350 rem mag with Bushnell 3-9x40 (serious overkill so I usually leave it at home).
Used to use a Browning BAR in .270 but I sold that one last summer.
I just bought a Traditions .50cal in-line magnum muzzle loader and am hoping to take it out this fall.

Browning BPS 20gauge 3" 26"
Rem 1100 20guage 2 3/4" 26"

I have yet to find my favorite rifle though and more are on the list to get. I've been dreaming of something custom for much too long but I'm still unsure of what I should get... way tooo many choices these days fella's and the worst thing is, you can't eliminate any of them because they simply all work**

Well let me think - anything magnum is out - perhaps I should join the short action crowd? That means I'm looking at 243/260/7mm08/308/.284/ or a 338 federal? Hmm.... Anyhow yea I hunt with the previously mentioned and wish I had some of the few just listed.

I only hunt deer in the bush so my choices are simpler than most. My main rifle is a Marlin 336 in .35 Remington with a Weaver 2 1/2X scope and this year I have added a Marlin 336 in .32 WS with a Williams receiver sight. I also intend to take my Thompson Centre Hawken flint lock for a walk this year

Safes are full, but my go-to rifle is a Baikal IZH 94 in Swedish Mauser/12. Have 85 gr hp with xxxgrains of unique for small game, 85 gr hp with 4350 for medium size/varmints, and 120 gr sp for big game. All shoot to the same POA at the appropriate range, and the shottie is always ready to pitch in..........

I found I have settled on two. First is an custom 8 mm rem on an rem 700 action, the other is an 270 WSM in an 8700 kimber M.

But the 264 in a win mod 70 does find its way to the front of the line every now and then.

i was just thinking about this very set up the other day....i think the 30-06 with 180 Ab's would be a perfect 500 yrd set up, i like the 40mm objective leupolds for sleekness, lower mounting, and less weight but other than that i think you might have picked a perfect alround set up imo...throw a kenton matching knob in yards on it when the load is done/chosen etc. grab your rangefinder and giver till ya drop;)

my a7 .270 wsm goes further but also recoiled like a bugger before the brake went on it, the 30-06 would be perfect for going 500 and not overdoing the recoil

I ahve a Steves 200 in .243 and 7-08. Also have a 700 ADL in 7mm Rem Mag.
The .243 wears a 3200 3-9x40 which I will never buy again. The 7-08 wears a vxII 3-9x40 and the big 7 wears a VXIII 3.5-10x40.
All shoot the TSX bullets extremely accurately. 85 grain for the .243, 120 grainers for the little 7 and 150 grainers for the big 7. The big 7 is also a fan of the 168gr Bergers. Hoping to knock something down with them this season.

Ruger M77 30-06 Leupold 3-9 x ?? - the first rifle my father purchased for me, I cannot seem to put it aside, sentimental value.

I also use his semi-auto Browning .22 for varmits, made in Belgium, really light, short, stock fed ammo. Heck it's so light, you can use it one handed.

My Dad bought me a Browning Abolt 7mm Rem Mag for christmas when I was 13 and have used it every single year for 20 years and counting. Sure not expensive but it kills deer every year.

First rifle was a "passed down" Lee Enfield .303

This last season I bought a Savage 114 American Classic .30-06 and put a Bushnell 4200 Elite on it.

I have a Savage M10 .308 mounted on a Choate ultimate sniper stock that has done very well for me. I also have a Win 30-30 that works for me as well.

i was just thinking about this very set up the other day....i think the 30-06 with 180 Ab's would be a perfect 500 yrd set up, i like the 40mm objective leupolds for sleekness, lower mounting, and less weight but other than that i think you might have picked a perfect alround set up imo...throw a kenton matching knob in yards on it when the load is done/chosen etc. grab your rangefinder and giver till ya drop;)

my a7 .270 wsm goes further but also recoiled like a bugger before the brake went on it, the 30-06 would be perfect for going 500 and not overdoing the recoil

It works very well for me. I can consistently kill 6'' to 7'' white balloons at 500 yards with winds up to 10mph on any given day. Balloons help me with judging wind and are cool to pop.lol With my reloads i'm getting 2650 to 2700fps so by my calculations around 1900fps or better at 500 yards. Perfect for the ballistic tips she likes to shoot. Even enough for the accubonds she likes also.
My scope turrets work great for different elevations thats why i prefer them over others. I have small drop/wind cheat sheets taped to the inside of my back flip up cap for easy reference. I would like more guns but the reality is i don't need them. I hope the wife don't see this! lol

Weatherby Synthetic 30.06 with Nikon 3x9x40. Not the fanciest but it gets the job done quickly and doesn't look like any other weatherby rifle out there. Thanks to a non-typical Weatherby stock...

Well, my go to rifle for the last 8 yrs was a Rem 788 in .308. Great rilfe, but wanted to try something else so sold it after proving it a final time on a moose this past fall....and got a Remington 700 CDL, (Boone & Crockett edition, it was just too pretty not to get!:D) in 7mm-08, with a Leupold VX3 3.5-10 x 40, B&C reticle. Not a big change up, but I'm not partial to big magnum recoil. Prefer something that is well mannered, accurate and flat shooting. Seems to fit the bill so far, I'll use if for everything from Coyote to Moose probably.......Well, only on Coyote that's too far for my 17 HMR to tag in the head. The .17 HMR is my all purpose varmint getter, it's a Marlin 917 VSF, Bausch & Lomb Elite 4200 3-9 x 40 on it. Pretty guns, both. Both at Corlanes currently getting a bit of sweetening done! Remington is getting pillar block bedded, the Marlin is getting the action polished and the trigger massaged to 2.5. Should be nice. I'll shoot those two well, everything else is for plinking, or in the case of the 870 Rem shottie, making clouds of dust around gopher holes!
