Hey guys, I am heading out to MB for a black bear hunt first week of May, while out there my buddy has booked us in with a guide to fish Lake Of The Woods, Musky/SM Bass season is open so that's what we'll target. Anybody out there ever fished that lake? Good/Bad experiences? I am looking forward to fishing some new water, hopefully I'll have some good photos to post when I get back!

I was out there last summer visiting friends in Sioux Narrows. If you don't know anyone who knows the lake then get a guide. It is amazingly huge compared to anything us Alberta's have seen. Very easy to get lost on that lake as well, a GPS is a must. Lots of deadheads and rocks, be careful.

Telling you where to go and fish there would be kinda pointless. The lake is so big it will totally depend on where you are staying. It would be like picking a spot between Medicine Hat and the US border, it covers so much area. There is so many bays, islands and channels, when you look across the water and think you are looking at the other shore, you realize a minute later it was just an island with someones million dollar house on it.

My buddy put me into some nice Smallmouth and Walleyes. We were not geared for Musky so we didn't bother, even though I still want to catch one. If you are going for Musky bring the big baits. I am not much for fishing them but I think they target the rocky points.

For the small mouth its your typical shore structure you see on the bass shows. We have a few hits on the large mouths in the lilly pads and a frog lure with flipping sticks. Didn't land any.

You will have a great time. Lots of bear and the fishing is amazing. I am sure you will find some.

Yep, just check the regs really well before you head out.

The fishing is excellent in most areas if you know how to look for structure.
Just make sure you gear up for the right species. Walleyes, Pike and Muskie all get huge in there. Most guys in the area will tell you that there are NA record species in every category in the lake....I have personally caught a few skis in the 48-52 range but as I said before, make sure they are in season.

If you require a guide I can shoot some emails out to some friends in the area and just hope that they have an open spot for you.

Good luck and enjoy the beautiful area

Was out there bass fishing the second weekend of May last year. We only went out for a couple hours while visiting my buddies family at there camp in Sioux Narrows. Between 3 of us we caught over 20 smallies and a couple large mouth as well in a couple hours casting shorline. I am pretty sure walleye doesnt open out there till 3rd weekend of may as well so.....

i was born and raised along the lake of the woods and fished it for over 20 years. lots of great fishing for many different kinds of fish and the best thing is you can get away from the crowds an still have good luck. i try to head back there every second year but mostly fish a few of the hundreds of other lakes in the area. good luck and have a good trip

I've been fortunate to have fished LOTW on several occasions. You're in for a scenic, fish-filled trip. What has been said is true, the lake is massive. Is it incredibly easy to get lost. Tight lines and watch out for the rocks/reefs!

If your hireing a guide , the will know whats open and what isn't . Manitoba has a way different system regarding Guided fishing there then here . Manitoba has some wicked fishing , gonna be headed there this summer again , going to do the big 4 again , Channel cats , Musky and Smallies , if late enough go after some of them Monster Walleye aswell .

If you've never fished Manitoba before your in for a real treat . Make sure you stop off at the Cabala's , way better then any store in this province .

Heres some Cat fish pictures from 2 years ago when I was there , Make sure you inquire with your guide about the master angler program .

Thanks guys, your right, just checked the regs, Bass and Norther Pike are the species that are open for this time of the year. We are using a guide so I trust that his navigation through the lake will be wise...

I will be sure to post stories/pictures when I get home!

Thanks again!
