View Full Version : Medicine Lake Gathering June 18-29
It is official we will be holding the next gathering at Medicine Lake Group Campground. The date will be June 18-20 2010. Any camping reservations will be dealt with by flygirl Please contact her with your confirmation of attendance and your unit information. She was kind enough to pay for the site her self. All costs for camping will be paid to her upon arrival at the gathering please. We will set up some sack races and what not for the kids. We would like to do prizes for all the kids. Now either we do a donation thing or we can charge an extra 10 bucks for camping fee's or whatever for a trip to the kids department store. But we will look at this a little more when we know how many kids and ages will be there.
Please post here:
Name
Number in group
Age Of Children
Pot Luck Contribution
Any suggestions of events or just in general please feel free to share them right here or send me a PM. I am looking forward to meeting new freinds and catching up with the old ones

Medicine lake is a Provincial campground 55 km north on hwy 22 from Rocky and 13 km east on a dirt road. It is well marked from both north and south. It has pike and perch in the lake. A long narrow body of water but fishable off shore, bait allowed. The campsite is a locked gate group site and away from the main campground. No power on site but it does have bathrooms( outhouse). You can fish right at the group site or at the main campground. The group site will hold aprox 9-12 units smallish or if creative parking ( tonyflyfish will help out here) maybe 15 units. cost...150.00 a night for first 5 units and 20.00 each additional unit. First come first in group site. Those comming late or we dont know about may have to camp in the main campground if there is no room for them. Close to Twin lakes ( rainbows) stocked, brood trout also fishable from shore. Those that are comming please let me know how many units and how many kids.

Well, we may be there. I spoke to hubby about the gathering this morning, and he actually sounded pretty interested :) I'm sure it helps that he's met a handful of you in person (and really liked who he met).
If we go, we'll be getting a motel room in Rocky (unless we have our trailer/motorhome issue worked out by them, which we probably won't).
Neither one of us has the time, energy, or inclination to dig through all of the camping gear, get it organized, and get it loaded. We've decided that "camping" for us right now means getting a motel room close to where we would like to camp.
If anyone can recommend a nice, clean, (small) dog-friendly, and toddler friendly, bed bug free motel in Rocky, that has non-smoking rooms that would be great :) Adjoining rooms or suites are a bonus if #1 son comes (he might have to work). I'm pretty picky about motels.
EDIT: I think it'll be the Super8 in Rocky. Everything else I turned up on Google looks scary.:scared0015:

There a new one in Rimbey as well, at least I think its a Super 8. Probably about the same distanc either way. Sounds like momma bears working nights that weekend, so I think I'm gonna bring the kids out for a day or 2. Sounds like it will be a great time. :D

Wayne, just follow the cop car and you'll find Tim Hortons.:)
Tony, Tony, Tony, you'd get lost in a hand basket....:computer-18:
Below you will find some pics that tonyflyfish was kind enough to take. Unfortunatly he does not know how to resize and post pics to this form.... Hence.... Me posting for him:sign0005:
Shelly, we have The Super 8 here, Walking Eagle, Best Western, Holiday Inn...They would be the ones I recommend. I think there is a campground in old town that has cottages I could check out for you. I think they might be older cottages though.
Reminder to all those who are going to camp...Please P.M. me with how many kiddies and what type of unit.
Reminder that cost will be dictated by how many show up...
Oh yes Tonyflyfish needs a rent-a-kid for that weekend, anyone have a Dennis the Menace:angry3:

I need an idea how many children will be attending this. Even if you don't know for sure if you'll be attending (but you would like to), I'll need to include your children in my count. I'm planning on getting little medals made up for all of the kids for participating in the events (one medal per child only, not a medal per child per event) . . . so that they all leave with something :)
Obviously, I want to make sure I don't order too few. I want to make sure that no child feels left out. At the same time, I don't want to pay for way more than we'll need (I'm not opposed to having a few leftover, however).
I've found what I want to get from http://www.trophykits.com . . . but I have to confirm tomorrow if they'll ship to Canada.
They'll be this insert:
http://www.trophykits.com/proddetail.asp?prod=2MM19
With this medal (in silver):
http://www.trophykits.com/proddetail.asp?prod=HR906
Probably with a solid blue neck ribbon (which is obviously a bit of a hanging hazard, so it would be very unwise to let kids run around in the woods wearing them).
I might get them engraved with "Medicine Lake AOF Gathering 2010" (or similar), but that depends how many of the things I'll be doing . . . engraving is silly expensive.
The sooner I know the better . . . I want to make sure I can get them in time if the company will ship to Canada (and if they won't, I'll find something else from another company).

You mean the take a vet fishing. That would be a good idea if it was set up and a sure thing but at this point it may not be. We will need to donate to something that is already established and ongoing.
I will have a fly box full of flies to contribute. Will post pic when got it all done. Take A vet Fishing has been delayed till we can get it all sorted out it is a huge task.

This weekend is open to all A.O. members, those with kiddies and those without. We just thought one weekend a year wouldnt hurt to dedicate to the kids. Come on out, enjoy the fun and enjoy the kids. lend a hand. Bring ideas. Meet other members, Thats what its all about.

Alberta Conservation is another good one (http://www.ab-conservation.com). They, of course, run the "Report a Poacher" program and rely on donated funds to keep this and other programs afloat.
If anyone has any other suggestions, please EMAIL them to me. Click on "DarkAisling" beside the stupid green bird, and choose "Send Email to DarkAisling." Your email address will be revealed to me if you do this. My PM box is something like 98% full, and I don't have time to clean it out right now.
Once I have a list, I'll email it to Jeff for approval. Then I'll create a poll, taking Jeff's wishes into account. I hope to compile the list for Jeff by 8PM tonight, so I can get the poll up and running tomorrow.
Thank you all for being so active in the gathering. I have done a doz or so now and it is great to see you all getting your hands dirty and sharing your ideas. The charity is a group choice not just for one person to decide. I would vote for a charity that would help kids. Keeping with the theme for the weekend. A local school lunch program,. Big Brothers etc etc. I will start paying more attention to this next week. We will get the pot luck, games and gear list all started then.
I trust everyone is contacting flygirl with your trailer information....
This gathering is open TO ALL members as flygirl said. I can assure you that you will get to know some top shelf people and have a great time doing it.
I will ask that everyone posts there confirmation of attendance on this thread with party size and sex and age of your little ones.
As I said I will let this thread float for the weekend and then start getting involved next week. Thank you all again. Have a great weekend and stay safe out there

Our lovely roachman (who is neither a roach or a man, so her alias confuses me), has picked up some prizes as well. I've suggested that she contact tjohnson to coordinate :) At this rate we're going to have lots of prizes for the kiddies!
I'm rethinking the medal idea . . . I'm thinking of going with Fox40s on ribbons instead of medals for every child. The Fox40s are more practical, I think, and everyone should have one :)
Edit: We still don't know if #1 son will be coming. We've firmly decided on a hotel, as that is just so much easier with our little guy (who becomes VERY ornery if he doesn't get a good sleep). Craig has decided that all he wants for Father's Day is breakfast in bed . . . room service will make that very easy ;)
So, Craig, Grayson, Robbie (our Lhasa Apso . . . who children must approach with caution), and myself will be there. James may or may not be there, depending on his Callaway Park work schedule.

Anyhoo, I'm doing the Fox40s for the kids as participation prizes. I've ordered break-away lanyards from Edmonton for them (the safest way for kids to wear them around there necks).

Yes I will be up there the morn of the 18th. We cant get the site until 2pm but if there is no one in the group site we can get in early. Yes there is a boat launch at both the group site and the main campground. The main campground is a cement launch, you can put your boat in there, drive around to the group site, tie up your boat ( no dock) jump in and out all weekend. yes joninab there is more room. Please pm me with details. Pot luck is usually second night, the rest of the time is fend for yourself. Sometimes someone cooks breakfast for everyone. We play that by ear.
Hmmm prizes are being done... Camping reservations done... I have got to thank all of you for getting involved such as you have. You have made this easy as pie.
I will be doing a pot luck on Sat night. And maybe some sing along stuff for big and small kids alike. I would like to do a fireworks show Sat night as well. Can you see what the camp ground rules and county bylaws are please Cathy I would not know who to contact. Has anyone thought of games for the kids yet? I will have first aid kits on site, with kids its always best to have everything you could ever need. There have been a few that have gone above and beyond anything I ever would have thought to get this going. I wont thank you publicly just yet But I assure you some kind of thanks is coming
I guess my next step is the food list, fire wood games etc etc. Please send me your contributions suggestions or questions to the pot luck or anything els that is listed or not listed above.

If you need me to do it up send me the schedule and I will print it off. Im going to come up with some games and send them to you. I would imagine the internet would be a good place to start. If you dont have the time for this let me know and I will do something up.

Some ideas:
1) The sign said NO FIREWORKS ALLOWED
2) Does anyone have a volley ball net-there is room in the center
3) I wll BBQ a big beef roast for the Saturday meal.
4) There could be a small soccer field marked out.
5) I will bring two hula hoops so Jeff and Cathy can have a hoop off!
6) A scavenger hunt would be fun and easy.
7) I am a First aid instructor and also have first aid kits ready.
8) There will be suprise gifts for the kids at my site.

At the lake itself: Several miles of hiking trails of mild to moderate ability. One that leads along the east shoreline, will take you to the mouth of the river. This trail peters out at the Narrows, this is the best swiming spot on the lake. Continue down the old road bed to the river, about 3 miles round trip I think from the campground. I never actually paid attention.
Across from the camp kitchen (mostly west), you will find an ancient indian village, including several graves. It is in the large tall spruce trees to your right if you stand in the kitchen doorway. I am sorry to say it has not been protected so see it now, as it is getting destroyed.
On the way into the lake you will find a small rough campsite, on your left. It was previously used as a Boy Scouts retreat.
North of the entrance to the lake is a little lake called Gosling. It was created by Ducks Unlimited. I have caught small perch here but it may winterkill as it is shallow. There were 5 islands that you could walk to until the lake was dammed. It is a nice quiet spot with warm waters in the summer. Here is also the remains of an Indian Village. If you know where to look you can see where the underground camp was. It collapsed probably 30 years ago.
North of where the Medicine Lake road joins 22, there is a small "Ghost Town" MT Town. Some camping there. It is 29 miles to Rimbey but with about 18 miles of it gravel.
South of Medicine Lake is a small stocked trout lake, Open Creek Dam. It is a half hour trip east of the lake and back around to the west to reach.
Over all the fishing is not that great anymore as the lake is very popular. Good lake for kids to catch perch, go straight across from the camp kitchen. I work towards the narrows, and work my way around.
Have fun.
If ya got room I'm commin !!!!! Got 2 brats girl age 7 and a boy age 9.

I'll be loading the truck up with firewood when I come out, which will probably be the friday night. I drive a Toyota so it won't be a huge load, but I'll stuff in as much as I can. I'll bring the saw along as well, and we can go cut some deadfall if we run out...

Okay, I have to admit, I've never caught or fished for pike. I have spinning rods for the kids and one for the girlfriend. I have a fly rod that jts1 so graciously donated to a newb. What should I be bringing for pike on the fly and for the spinning rods? Wire leaders? I've only started back into fishing in the last two years and haven't been out much......so nobody laugh at me....kay....lol.

I started the first gathering and since then done about a doz of these as some of you know and they always turn out great. But this one is different With the help of some great people everything has been sorted out. I take my hat off to you all. As for the food list I found that no matter what people respond with there will be a wonderful feast to be had. I am doing Nakoda Lodge in about 4 hrs and Bullshead on Sunday. I hope the rest of you are going to have a great weekend on the water as well. Good luck out there and stay safe

My family came back that way on Sunday. The road from highway 22 is hell. Very rough and potholed. The road from Rimbey was good.
The pike were feeding in the shallows on perch minnows. It was great to watch. Loads of minnows so the pike are feeding well. Take smelts and perch colorations, you should get lucky. God!:thinking-006: I'm getting old if I think that is getting lucky.

Shelly, from calgary if it was me i would come up 2 north, west at Bowden, north 22, to Sundre, West through Sundre than north 22 to Caroline. West 54 and north 22 to Rocky, west 11 and north 22 again to Medicine lake. Way less traffic. Or 2 to Red Deer and 11 to 22 north, up to you but you'll get more traffic that way. The other way is a little snakey but a nice drive all the way.

Just in case I dont have time this eve to post>>>>> The whole idea of this gathering was for the kids and is to be kid orintated. I just want everyone to keep this in mind while at the gathering. Not that as adults we cant have fun but we must keep the kids uppermost in our mind for this weekend. Also remember we are in a Provincial campground and Provincial campground rules apply. Medicine Lake staff advised me that as long as no one complains than a little noise is acceptable after11pm. But if they can hear us at the reg camp site we will be shut down. If they hear us up there we are loud. I hope everyone that attends this function will have a wonderful time and we will try to keep the kids as busy as we can. Im just so sorry jst1 and mrsjst2 will not be there. Jeff is the life of the party and a great host. So I will see everyone there with bells on and fishing rods at the ready. The kids are going to have a blast....:sHa_shakeshout::sHa_shakeshout::sHa_shak eshout:

We're hoping to roll out at 11 . . . but Craig is still bangin' in floor! He still has to fix the trailer lights, too. I've just about got everything together. Still haven't done the grocery shopping though :o
G is hot 'n' cold. As long as we keep him good and doped up he should be fine.
We should be there sometime before dark. :(

Well, we're back to plan "A" and will be getting a hotel room in Rocky.
The dude who sold us this trailer has chalked up some seriously BAD karma (and if I ever see him again, I'll beat him . . . badly).
Hope to leave here around 1-1:30.

Yes a big thank you to roachman, Hal and
the Fishin Hole for the gifts for the kids. It was like Christmas in June for them all.
TJ, thanks for the gifts you brought for the grown ups. The casting competition was fun, especially listening to Wayne's excuses!
My first ever AO gathering like this I have attended and definitely now looking forward to the next one.
Great bunch of people and good times had by all.

Oh that note, I found one of the compass/thermometer tools purchased by Hal underneath my seat in the truck on the way home. If any of the kids didn't get one, please PM me your mailing address and I'll get it out to you pronto! I felt terrible about that, and I was going to call Cathy about it when I got distracted.
Oh and Dark Alisling the magical disappearing act
:o
Let's just say that owning your own business can really suck at times . . . my poor honey has been busting his hump since 3 am trying to save our biggest contract (and he's had to fire a friend of 25 years). :(
C'est la vie.
It was great to meet some new faces, and spend some more time with the familiar ones :) I'm looking forward to the next gathering . . . though I'll be leaving Craig and Grayson at home next time: so I have some time to fish!
EDIT: I've learned that Hunter Trav's boy didn't get the compass tool, so I'll be making that right pronto. My apologies. I should have counted just to be 100% sure that they were all there!

Yes it was a great time and memories forever. The grandson caught his first ever pike, recieved his first ever fishing rod. The AO members cannot thank everyone who donated gifts and prizes. It was unreal. Not a peep out of the kids that where there. No arguing or bickering. Laughter was the only sound you heard. Will post pic later. Shelly I have 3 lanyards left. If someone did not recieve one let me know. Great job by the way on them the kids loved them. It was whistling morning on Medicine Lake. Having this by the water payed off as the kids didnt come out, prunes is what we all got back......

And Kathy of course for organizing great location and great event!!!
I am glad to hear that it was a great time. I apologize that I could not attend my own gathering. But it was done in high fashion from what I am told, My hats off to you all. Its a shame cause I would have been the biggest kid there. The next gathering will be for the adults Time for us to be able to play a little without the worry of little eyes and ears running around. I will set it up so that all the regs can attend Steve, Ken and Sandra etc. Again I thank all of you who stepped up and made this a great event. You all are the definition of both good people and responsible anglers. It is my privilege and honor to call you all my friends

Send out a link to some photos to a bunch of folks, but the forum won't let me send anymore PMs for another 1/2 hour.
Can someone please send the link to JohninAB and dmckay?
Only two more photos to upload. Sorry, I won't publicly share the link as there are quite a few pictures of people's children . . . and I only post photos online of my minor children.
Thx :)

That was an awesome weekend, my kids were out within 5 minutes of hittting the road for home...LOL The weather was great, the kids had a blast, got cool prizes, and will probably talk about this non stop for weeks to come. That group site was awesome, and having our own private boat launch was sweet. We'll have to book early for next year!!! Oh, and thanks to all those who donated the prizes!!! :D

One day we'll have to make it happen. It was good to have you aboard, made for some great company, and I had a blast exploring the lake with you. We'll definately have to get the families together again if we can this summer. :happy0180::oregonian_winesmile

Well it looks like you all had a great time ( I seen some of the other pics on crackbook...lol ), another successful AO gathering :sHa_shakeshout:
Seems a little different for me just reading about the gathering this time :( and I can't wait to hear ( in person ) some of the "un-postable" stories of the happenings ( there's always a good one or two of them ) from this gathering.
AHHHH see I am not the only one with a pink fishing rod.
Unfortunately you are not getting off that easy buddy. That one looks like it was BORROWED from a kid, unlike your adult pink rod - nice try tho :snapoutofit:

I dont know, Im pretty sure that little pink rod had "Daddy" written on it :sHa_sarcasticlol:
best thing tho was he did catch his first pike this weekend. Maybe not on the Barbie rod, but I wasnt there so it might have been ;)

Im thinking at the next gathering, we should all bring a kids rod, and have a fishoff with them!!! Winner DOESNT get his picture posted with the rod! The rest shall live in infamy!
Dude it takes a real man to go out with the likes of you and Steve and use a Pink fishing rod. Steve let my good ugly stick go down the hole with a 80lb pike on the end of it. I may just use the pink one all season this winter

No Wayne, it wasn't the pink Barbie rod I caught the pike on....lmao. It was pretty cool to get my first pike though. Even better was that my two youngest boys got their first before I got mine, and they did it off the dock. That was priceless!!

Aside from being green with envy....I am absolutely elated that everyone had a great time and that the kids were all smiles for the weekend. Weather co-operated which is always helpful. Looked like an awesome location as well. Most definately fitting for all the kids. Really wished the husband and I could have been there, however the oldest daughter was turning 18 and unfortunately she has never managed to catch the fishing fever. I definately noticed that many of the kids attending the function did catch it and could very well be hollering "move over Dave Mercer!" Absolutely awesome photos and I am glad everyone had such a great time. Thanks so much to those who shared them with me. :sHa_shakeshout:Got my fingers crossed that we will be able to attend the next gathering planned. I look forward to meeting all of you!!!

Eva (our 10 y/o) was talking about the pike she caught in the dingy, she just non-chalantly said, yeah I caught one, and had to get the hook out and throw it back, but it was small. we started laughing, because I guess me bringing her out with me has given her the big fish fever now. the hammer handles are not exciting anymore.:thinking-006:
This is the girl with no sense of balance, standing up in the dingy!!!
OH and it was caught with the red and white stripe spoon donated by TFH!!!
So much for my amazingly relaxing day yesterday. Before I even got to proof read my post there, I got a call from the school, Rooney got nailed by a swing and was bleeding. pushed his teeth through his bottom lip and loosened them a little. Good thing he is a boy, he had bounced back by the afternoon.:fighting0030:
Thanks again to everyone, and I cant wait for the next meeting
