Headed out to my favorite local pond Sunday, again no wind, and very hot. The pike were going crazy, the water was like glass. I could pick out snails on the bottom 8 feet down. At times I had 4 or 5 pike below my canoe, and almost every cast had at least one follow. I learned a lot from watching them as I fished, found some new techniques to get them to strike. They would follow my lures to the canoe, and just circle below me, so I figured out how to tease them to hit. I also experienced something new with pike, 3 or 4 times I just let my spoon flutter to the bottom below me, and had a pike stare at it for a while then inhale it off the bottom. An awesome day, I ended up seeing well over 200 pike, and caught over 50. I was rather pleased to say the least, especially since this is 15 minutes from my home !! sizes werent huge, but I did catch 3 over 7 pounds and up to 8 1/2, all on 6 pound mono and a microlight rod. Cant wait for the long weekend to do it all over again!!!!

Awesome pics Wayne. I'm jealous I had high hopes for doing some early season pike fishing with the fly rod.

Wow job well done!!!!!!! Caught 50!?! How long were you there for?? Were they all caught with the spoon or did you try soft baits (worms, etc.) with similar success?

yikes fishing for pike with an UL, seems like a very bad idea.

biggest Ive seen from this lake was about 14 or 15 so 6 pound test in open water is plenty. And fun :) its south of hiway 1 and north of hiway 3
I caught most on spoons, but got some on wildeyes. Had one bite the tail off, so I cast it back to him and he ate the rest :)

An older fellow at MacGregor taught me years ago about fishing for pike in Spring with Smelts; put the smelt on belly up, cast out and leave the bail open. Having forgotten this until last year, we tried this out at Badger and it was crazy good, but you have to watch your line. On a funny'ish note, I released a fish that really gutted it's mouth on my Storm lure (they really gotta make a less aggresive hook set up on them thar lures), I knew the fish wasn't going to fair well but I released it nonetheless. Later, while standing on the building platform I notice what looks like the fish I released belly up and struggling and then up from the darkness and WHAM, a 15 pound pike sharks it, shakes it pit bull style, lets it go then heads straight towards my Dads rod. 15 pound pike.

Is there a boat launch on this lake?

Is there a boat launch on this lake?

sorta, just sand tho and you would never get a big boat in and out, theres a long ledge of water around the launch thats only a foot or so deep. Even have to push the canoe out a long ways most days.
