Heading for La Ronge next week. Any tips on early season lakers/locations/techniques? Also, has anyone fished Mackay lake, 65 kms north of La Ronge? Caught lakers there 20 yrs ago.:sHa_shakeshout:

Been to Lac Laronge many times over the years. I have relatives in La Ronge. I have only fished for the lakers there a few times. We trolled large spoons like a Williams Wobbler, very slowly in Hunters Bay. Caught some nice fish over the years. We also used the hammered version of the Williams Wobbler too.

Here is where I got that picture from. Looks like some great information there. http://www.manitouweatherstation.com/how-to-catch-lake-trout-best-trout-lures.htm But I sure wouldn't use 6lb test for a main line for the lakers. Maybe only too connect the weight onto the three way swivel.

If you've ever been up there you'll know that every bay has some nice pike. Each bay has it's own little ecosystem. I started my fly fishing for pike up there years ago. I tell ya people up there had no idea what the heck I was doing. They all said I was crazy. That is until 4 of us went out in 2 boats and I was dragging some mouse patterns over the lillypads. I had some very agressive pike slam my mouse like it was their last meal.

I flew into MacKay Lake and a few others up north of there. I don't remember much of the trip though as I was just a young whipper snapper at that time. All I remember was that my uncle had a boat sitting there waiting for us when we got there.

Have fun. It's a great place to fish.

We do the exact same as rob's post, although I think you may need a 3-4 oz weight to get down to the depth. As far a lure behind it, the wobblers are good, five of diamonds is good, a floating original rap (9, 11, 13) is awesome, hering rig awesome (apparently although I've never done it), or we've had luck with a Gibbs ruby eye'd wiggler. That is my favorite.

I totally forgot about that damn lure. My dad had a bunch of them that he left me amongst his other tackle that he had when he passed away. I couldn't remember where he used them. After reading your post I recalled it was up there at Laronge that he used them for lakers.

I did much better on the Williams though.

I was just thinking of heading up to La Ronge for some Walleye action and bam! Here is a thread on it, lol. If I may ask, does anyone have any recommendations on Cabins, Resorts offering fishing packages? Thanks.

Good for walleye in Hunter's bay/Pickerel bay at the moment. Slow for lakers in the main lake. Got some decent laker action at Nemeiben lake just north of Laronge. Sunny and warm. Not like here in Calgary.Glad I brought maps and a GPS. Used them a lot on the big lakes.
