According to the book "Fish Of Alberta" crayfish are only native in Alberta to the Beaver river watershed, hence Beaver lake.

All other populations in the provice are supposidly introductions.

But, what are people using for traps? Also, what are people using for bait?

On the coast (and elsewhere) we always used soft cat food (a specific type) in the can, just holes punched in it, for bait.

I know of a place where there are crayfish (saw the remains of one one day - huge) and I would not hesitate to eat them from there.

Tips?

Advice?

It's illegal to trap them, check your regs.

You can catch them by hand or by angling. Lots in travers.

yeah i get a kick out of that. invasive species. kill immediately.
do not transport live, but don,t catch them with a trap to remove them.lol
reg,s are reg,s but that does seem rather silly to me.

my .02 cents

Totally agree. Just one of those classic AB things that don't make sense.

I was wondering about the trap thing. Read the regs again today, and find it strange that crayfish are mentioned under "collecting bait fish" section.

Under the crayfish section is states "Legal capture methods include angling (sportfishing regulations apply) or catching them by hand" then it goes on to mention that no license is required if catching by hand.

Sooooo, if you set a trap to catch "baitfish" in an area where legal to do so (i.e. the use of bait or bait fish is not prohib.) and you catch a bunch of crayfish, as long as you kill them immediately you can keep them (I would assume) as they are not "fish other than bait fish" that must be released.
