Im not sure what kind of camera your using but I find you get the best pics when you aim your camera up and down trails as apposed to perpendicular. That way the deer is in view for longer and less likely you will get a blank photo. Also, if you aim your camera towards the north or south the sun wont set off your camera when it is rising and setting. One last thing, right after you arm your camera just wait around and let it take a picture of you before you leave to make sure its working correctly. Too many times I didnt do this, went to check my camera and found that I forgot to turn it on, etc.

Here are some of mine over the last month...date is wrong though, it's a month behind. I suggest putting it out on a trail & see what shows up. Do some scouting & where you see more animals, move the camera. Enjoy!

lol potty!! Funny thing is I've hunted this property for a few years now and this is the first time i've seen elk there. Lots of moose & mulies, but it's nice to see whitetails & elk too. Bow season can't come soon enough.

Nice Pics guys. SKYtop- you seem to have a fair bit of human activity around your cam. I hope they are people you know because that camera may dissapear. It seems like it is in a good spot for pictures though and you are right that one deer sure has something going on.

I found this one on the internet

Bag of mineral salt
Bag of Dical (Dicalcalcium phospate 21%)
Bag of feedgrade molasses for cattle

Mix as follows
80 lbs of the mineral trace salt
50 lbs of Dical
50 lbs of molasses ground sugar
You can also add 15 lbs of feedgrade sweet lime
This will give you almost 200 lbs of mix

I picked mine up on Ebay (tons on there) for $139 US plus shipping. Ended up at $194 and change (through FedEx-pensive), which seems to be a decent price for them. I picked up a security box for it as well, which was $49 more, but worth it for a bit of peace of mind. I think I'm going to try building my next ones from kits, if only I can find the proper cameras.

I can already feel the addiction taking hold...

Yup, just like that one. It seems that the more popular cameras used in them are hot items on Ebay, and I'm not savvy enough to snag them. What type do you use?

nube
07-11-2010, 07:39 AM
Not hard to get at all. I use the s40. The sony 600 is better but also more $$$
I have about 4 olympus D360's here if you want to get some cameras. They take good pictures and are Very cheap. The only downside is they are bigger in size and will need a bigger case and they use the older Smart Media cards which are a bit of a pain to find. Lots on E-bay though.
I figure with a D360 I could make one as cheap as $80 or less. Very easy to wire up as well.

Islander
07-11-2010, 10:35 AM
Yeah, the s600 is the main one that I've been looking for, but I'll keep my eyes peeled for the others. Thats too bad about the d360's. I'd be into them, but obsolete technology is a pain in the butt (I still watch VHS tapes). When I find time, I'll PM you for some more info if thats OK. Thanks, Nube.

nube
07-11-2010, 11:40 AM
Well I hate to say it but the ones used for trail cams are all obsolete and not being made any more.
The s600 is not an easy build for the first timer. The d360s are still great to use. just a little harder to get cards for and they are bulky

Thats good advice from Buckbrush..

What I also do is set the cam up and then I walk down the trail in front of it and let it take a couple pics. Then you can tell exactly how the pics will turn out and its not a guessing game. You might only get 1 picture of an animal of a lifetime and it would sure be a shame if you just caught the top of his rack.

Great pics and keep them coming..

Thought I would pull this thread up again, seeing as I have a few new pics. I went to check my cam yesterday, and after putting the SD card into my digital camera, they showed up with "No Images". This was the same as the previous time I had checked, and I was beginning to think the deer had moved out, or the cam was screwed.

I took the cam home, then realized that I had the wrong format (or something like that) When I hooked up the USB cord to my computer, it was like christmas time:sHa_shakeshout:

That's one of the the best bucks posted yet, Bwire's buddy looks like he is working on a monster aswell. You can tell he is going to have some mass and has the length. Nice buck for sure, I would be keeping a very close eye on him!

Great pics so far, love the monster bucks and the cougar and grizz were awesome as well.

Checked 3 out 4 cameras yesterday got 100+ new pics. Started walking into tcam#4 and stumbled onto a fresh black bear carcass 50 yrds from my truck on the trail . I'm guessing it was nuisance bear put down by SRD but will confirm with officers today. Didn't feel like walking through 25 yr old cutblock after that, I've seen a few grizz around there over the years. Here are few of my pics still nothing any were close to big.

we put our camera in a different spot for four weeks only to have y7 different spikers, which was maddening. So we put it back at our normal spot, and in 48 hours over the weekend we got two note worthy bucks.
The photos were taken north of athabasca.

Looks like one of my cameras will be staying put for at least another week.I talked with our local F&W officer last Sunday and he said they hadn't shot any bears this year. He went out to investigate on Monday but was woofed at as he was stepping out of the truck. He said he walked along the road and what ever was on the kill was checking him out, he could see the trees moving in the block with each of his steps. So he hollered HEY BEAR and it woofed again but didn't run away and that was the end of the investigation. I gave him another brief description of what I saw, definately a black bear that had been drug on a plastic tarp, the kind used by weyerhauser for wrapping lumber. The bears intestines were exposed so maybe it was a bad shot or some one was rooting around for the gull bladder.

Maybe I'll get some grizz pics on my tcam. It's set up about 300-400 yrds from the kill site.

Here's a few from earlier this month. We've got a really good spot. Lots of animals.

This has always been a Muley area, but we've only got a couple marginal bucks and a rough looking doe on cam this year. Seems like the Whiteys are taking over. Tons of does and bucks. We've been chasing the 12 point for a while.....He's a smart bugger!

We got some real nice photos last week. Two bucks that we had last year all through velvet finaly came in this weeek for the first time this summer. Last year they were both good deer, but now their amazing. We got one shed antler off of the brow tine buck that scored just over 70 inches, and both bucks look to have added 10 inches this year over last year. We dont think they'll make 170 but definitly 160. the one bad thing is the tall buck didn't grow a nice G4 on his left antler that he had last year. the last photo will be a pope & younger next year.

I would kill the tall guy this year because he is a brute buck and It looks to me like he is going downhill...

The brow tine buck would be a book typ if he wasnt stunted on his G2's

If you are in "Central" Alberta it is not at all uncommon to see a cow with twins.

In the north and west where there are lots of predators it is more uncommon.

Nice moose pic.

OOPS! I didn't notice that it was not your pic but came from someone else.
