I have a 1970 - 71 7.5 hp merc outboard. I think that the stator's is ailing and that a replacement or a rebuild may be the remedy. Online, the stator costs $250 for the cheapest one and $400 for th most expensive one. Is this out of line? I feel as though they're trying to get me to bend over.

Does / can anyone make or rebuild it in the Calgary area for a reasonable price?

Try Canadian Alternators & Starters in NE Calgary - I've heard a few people say they are pretty good. (403) 291-4043. :)

Are you sure you want to pump that kind of cash into an engine that is about 40 years old? The technology (CDI for example) in the newer ones is so much better that I'd see this as an opportunity to upgrade. You could probably get a few bucks reselling it as-is, put a few buck to it and you'll be shopping for a replacement in the 90s at least.

Just my $0.02

Go looking on Ebay. There are lots of stators new/used for different models. You may find a good deal there.
