View Full Version : Reasonably priced ultralight setup?

I was thinking about the sale coming up at TFH...last year they had some pretty wicked deals, and there was lots of stuff that I needed, but I was pretty much broke so I ended up with an ice fishing rod/reel and some smaller consumables.

This year the money isn't a concern, but I now I have most of what I need already

So I was thinking about picking up an UL setup to use on goldeye and little trout. My biggest thing though, is that I'm typically shorebound, so I prefer my rods to be on the longer side...ideally at least 6'6" though when I was looking at them last year it seems most of the UL rods are a little shorter

I was told to check out the Berkley Cherrywood rods, but that's as far as my research has gone so far, so I guess I'm looking for rod, reel and possibly line suggestions. Nothing crazy expensive, but not the cheapest thing out there either :)

Diawa and Quantum have some rods you might want to check out.

Try to find a 7 foot rapala magnum ultra light rod and pair it up with a the smallest pflueger president reel and 4lbs test fireline crystal. You should be able to toss the small stuff a mile and have a pretty decent set up.

jay do not buy the cherrywood berkleys, they have a tendency to break really easy. had had one in my hand and the store owners ran over and said that they have had hundreds of complaints about that rod just snapping.

Heres the rod you need. You'll never have to worry about somone taking it or even somone mistakingly taking it. It'lll be perfect for backpacking, quading or even just tucking it in your truck.

Just kidding.

I do actually have a suggestion, if you dont mind going to bass pro. Last year made the trip to bass pro, and was looking for an ultralight just as you, however I was looking to stay close to 50 bucks. I was suggest one of the bass pro brand rods, and i really like it. The exact model i bought is gone now but the one im posting is similar just the new model (mine was 2 piece this is a 4 and a bit longer)
It has a nice tight fit on my reel, casts well and is really sensitive (fished for small stocked trout and felt and saw all the bites). Really do enjoy this rod especially for the price.

I do believe that you could get a nicer rod but you'd have to pay for it, but this rod is truly worth every penny. If not it would make an excellent back up rod, or a rod to stash in the truck for when you get the need to fish.:sHa_shakeshout:.

For the reel I would recommend buying from the Fishin Hole, simply because they tend to know better. I'm running a P'flueger reel, and do suggest it for your ultralight setup, they have a nice smooth retreave and cast excellent IMO. Saving up to buy the P'flueger premium, but also suggest looking at the P'flueger President.

Also I usually have Stren line (usually original or super knot) on my reels, its good for tying strong knots, and a fairly low memory. Have caught a couple fish over the lines pound rating. However I am thinking about picking up some berkley transoptic to give a try. I usually try to use high visibility line, but thats just personal preference.
Usually use between 4-8 pound test depending what im fishing for.

i've got a cherrywood, had it for years and some people are appauled by how poorly i treat my gear. it's a medium-light action rod tho, perhaps stronger than an UL. i find it to be a very sensitive rod for the price.
cheers

Don't underestimate the Batman rod! http://outdoorsmenforum.ca/showthread.php?t=64769

BP is pretty out of the way for me, but that rod does look interesting. I see the description says that it is a spin/fly rod?

Jay pick up a Fenwick Walleye Classic rod , its a medium rod but the tip is as sensitive as any ultra light . And it only comes in 6'6 .

Also the Berkley Lightning rod , Great rod super sensitive , Pick up the Medium / light and is sensitive to feel the lightest of taps but will still wrangle in a pike . This is one of my favorite Walleye set ups . As well as the one above , also use it for trout when i really feel the urge to fish them .

Both rods are in the 50 - 60 dollar range .

Slap on a Quantum pulse reel or the Shamano symetre and your laughing . Just picked up one of them Shamano Stmetre , Im in lust with it .

Knew that I shoulda suggested the princess model for you instead.:D

Yah i saw that too, when i was going to suggest the rod to you. I had only bought the rod when at BP never went online to look at it.
So i went out and checked the rod and i think the only reason is that they made it to hopefullly sell a couple more. THe only thing i saw was that they made the reel seat, so that it can handle both types of fishing. But I strictly use mine for spincast.
All i can say I guess is that I've been using that rod for about a year now, iddnt know it could handle a fly reel till last night. But really enjoy its performance.

Hum...now you've got me thinking that I don't really *need* an UL setup. Well I know I don't NEED one...but I kinda want one

I do already have a 7' ML Fenwick rod that I really enjoy using, as well as a 6' L Ugly Stik that I've been using for the smaller stuff.

Maybe I should just look at picking up a nicer reel to go with the Fenwick rod?
