View Full Version : One hook for a year

I read an article a couple months ago, not sure which magazine it was in but the article was about a guy who used 1 kind of lure for an entire year (white jig). The only difference he allowed himself was to go from a 1/8 to a 1/2 oz jig head.
My question is if you could only use one lure for an entire season what would it be and why?

For the record mine would be a Ratlnrap in a perch pattern I think. I've caught fish out of a boat, off the shore and through the ice with them. One of the most versatile. If I'm allowed a second pick its the #2 len thompson 5 diamonds.

If you had to use one hook a whole year I dont think you could do much better than a white jig if you intended to chase multiple species. A rattle plug would probably be a good choice too if you didnt plan on fishing for trout, perch, or whitefish though.

I would hate to have to use only 1 lure for a season; part of the fun for me is switching it up lots & rifling through my tackle box(es) for "the next hot lure" lol.

To answer the question though, jointed XRap in clown colour.

I agree with the guy who wrote the article.. Except I would choose a chartreuse 1/8 oz jig.. Caught more fish on that hook,, well what ever I have caught a crap load..

Ditto on the 5 of diamonds as long as you could switch sizes. I have caught all sorts of fish from small trout to large pike and walleye on them.:)

I think a jig would be a great choice. White, black yellow or chartreuse.

If you could always put a bit of bait on it it would be nice but that is not always possible.

I would definately lean towards a spinner... probably blue fox. Hooked up walleye, trout, pike, goldeye, perch, whitefish all on the same one. In 1 trip alone a couple years ago, using the exact same hook, i caught a rainbow, a walleye, a pike and a goldeye in about 2 hours. talk about versatile! Of course spinners wouldn't work through the ice so I would probably go towards a pink jig head. Always successful.

Well, it really depends on fish we like to target and fishing methods...My main target is pike, walleye and perch so my choice would be jig - if I had to chose a color I would go yellow. But for the trout hunters I bet wobblers or spinners would be the choice.
I once was involved in heated argument after fishing derby what is better for pike in that lake wobblers or jigs.... well we made couple teams to solve it and one team whole day was using only jigs and other only wobblers..... It was basicly a tie at the end of the day just proving the point that you catch the best with what you are most comfortable. To me it is a jig.

If it was a fly, I'd probably go with an olive woolly bugger in a size 6. I think. Maybe black. Maybe a size 4. I'm not sure. Can I have two? Hmm. Maybe a san juan worm? Can I have three? ;)

Otherwise, I'd go with a chartreuse jig . . . maybe a 1/4 oz. I'm assuming that the "one hook" could be dressed anyway one likes: tails, bait, etc. It seems the most versatile.

 I'm sure there will be pics eventually!

I lost the bonker, then I found it again, then I lost it again. I think I know where it is ("lost" means lost in my house, or my truck, or my garage). I'm not fishing right now though, and I may not fish again until next summer. I might get out this winter. We'll see.

I would probably pick this guy:

The more fishin' I get in the happier I am but if I only catch one fish a year I want it to be just like this one:

Mepps Syclops in the white glow in the dark and red color. I have caught really good sized pike, walleye, perch, goldeye, and artic grayling all on this hook. Caught them in rivers, lakes, trolling, casting from shore and boat, jigging, and ice fishing.

It's actually a Tarpon. I caught it in Cuba in May. It took me a long time and many trips to get one like that. It is no giant by Tarpon standards but it is my personal best. Lots of fun on a fly rod.

I would have to agree with the guy that wrote the article, i have caught 99% of all my fish the last two years on a white jig. The only thing i ever change is if i use a single or double tail. That is all year round for lakes and rivers. Walleye, jacks, ling, whitefish, goldeye, rainbows, brookies, and bull trout.
