if we put a trolling motor on a 10 foot inflatable with a battery on it, do we need a license for that? we just want something to putt around on the lake on. We do have all the other safety equipment.. life jackets, water tight flash light, floating line etc.. but, it's under 10 HP and it's just a trolling motor.

The transport canada regs (for registering a boat) start at about 12ft (the metric equivalent) so you are OK.

Under 10hp, under 12 ft, you don't need a number. You do, however, need a boat operators license.

And you also need lifeJackets. you may be able to swim, but would look real stupid if something happened and they found your body a week later

So I need to get a license if I am to attach a trolling motor to this 10 footer?

I have lifejackets :)

As silly as it seems, you do. You need a license if you attach a trolling motor to anything: be it an inflatable, a canoe, or a pontoon boat.

WOW, I was not aware that this plauge had spread to electric trolling motors and canoes. I can fricking paddle faster than my trolling motor can push me, they can ****ing blow me.

Yep, electric motors too, any kind of propulsion and you need a PCOC.

Yeap, you better know who has the right of way when the barge comes rolling through chain lakes.

I should take that test and get it over. Just need to get one of my friends to sign up as a supervisor

plain and simple any motorized watercraft you operate you need a boaters license....whether is a canoe or inflatable if you are paddling your good to go but make sure you have all the safety gear required on the water.

I have a 10Ft Zodiac with an 50lb electric and you do need the operator license otherwise risk a hefty fine:sign0068:

Boat licensing didn't make a lot of sense to me this year, not having been checked once. Then last Thursday I saw a SRD pickup pulling a little trailer with two Seadoos on it heading away from Sturgeon.

Felt a lot better about the licensing req'mt then. :)
