I spent some time on the Bow again today, those Mooneyes are rather addictive. Good thing is where I park my truck there are lots of hoppers, so there is a built in bait supply at the ready. There was a bit of a breeze, and it was fairly cool so not much for rising fish, but I did manage to land 5 more Mooneyes, again not a Goldeye to be seen in the area. Also found 4 seperate Leopard frogs, the size of them seems to indicate that they are breeding in this area, which is an awesome thing at least to me. I have reported the sightings to the person doing the research so hopefully it makes some sort of difference. Maybe they are actually making a comeback in the area, who knows.
Used my microlight gear with 4 pound line, the mooneyes put up a great fight, jumping and running and putting on quite a show as usual. The shine off these things in the sun is amazing, you almost need shades just to catch them.

If you dont mind me asking? Where on the bow are you able to fish with bait using hoppers? Used to catch lots of goldeyes using hoppers east of Red Deer....lots of fun.

Bait Fishing
Fishing with bait, including bait fish, in PP1 lakes and streams is allowed except at locations listed with Bait Bans under “PP1 Lake and Stream Listings.”
from Bassano Dam downstream to South Saskatchewan River
May 8 to Mar. 15 – Trout limit 2; Mountain Whitefish limit 5 over 30 cm; Walleye and Sauger limit 3; Walleye over 50 cm; Pike limit 3 over 63 cm; Burbot limit 10; Goldeye limit 10; Lake Sturgeon limit 0; Bait allowed.

It is a lot of fun, and a pretty much unlimited supply of bait right on the riverbank. Funny thing, in over a week I havent caught one goldeye, all mooneyes

This is the exact time of year we would hit the Goldeye run back home on the Winnipeg River. And we were the opposite, hardly a Mooneye to be seen. Now I'm dying for some good old Neptunes Smoked Goldeye.

I tried frying a goldeye years back, should have just eaten the frying pan, :sHa_sarcasticlol: Id like to try some smoked, but I wont eat fish out of the river anyways, so I guess Im out of luck, I hear its pretty good that way. Maybe the goldeye run up the Oldman and the moons up the Bow I have no clue, just enjoying catching them.

It is good to see them, hopefully it means the water quaility is getting better. I always pass the sightings on to Alberta Conservation for their research.
