I want to buy a small outboard for a 12' boat, just wondering what is better in the smaller engine sizes ~5Hp or so. I see the four strokes are a bit bigger and weigh more which I don't like, also I see there is a few 2 strokes out with built in gas tanks. A real plus IMO for dragging gear through the bush.
The four stroke is more money as well but it may last longer, start better, be better on fuel, and not stink  etc. Just looking for a couple second opinions here.

It's tough to beat the size of the 2-Stroke. I like the built in gas tank and they are really easy to fix if they ever do break. Most modern motors require oil/gas mixtures that are very low. I know mine mixes up at 50:1 and so it doesn't really smell.

2 stroke, if you look after it, will serve you well, cheaper , lighter and at 5hp don't worry about fuel usage, it's not a factor here.
