So I headed out this morn to find some deer. Hopefully a few of you got to catch the sunrise in Calgary, it was amazing! Started crisscrossing the backroads, saw a few does, small bucks, but nothing worth snapping. Was actually thinking of working my way back to town when I spotted two deer out in a wheat fiels that looked like they were sporting headgear. Stopped and got the glass on em and noticed they were decent bucks. Problem was, the field was flat and I was a km away. They were already on alert when I stopped, so I continued on to the next approach and pulled in on the opposite side. Grabbed the camera and began my crawl thru the wheat, checking periodically to see if they saw me coming. The wind was perfect and they seemed to be content so I kept crawling.....and crawling. When I got within 40 yards the bigger of the two spotted me. It was time to start snapping before the bolted. This is when I noticed he was shedding his velvet! I snapped away and the hard-horned one started to circle around to wind me, crossing right in front of his buddy while doing so! I figured if I was winded, it was over, so I stood up and walked directly at them, closing the distance to about 30 yards before they both bolted over the nearest rise. I was hoping I had a few decent shots out of it, and started checking the camera as I began my walk back to the truck. I got about 25 yards into the trek back and looked up to see mulie #3 standing not 30 yards away! Immediately started snapping again when I noticed more antler sticking out of the wheat. Eventually the wide one bolted and that was enough to make the big boy stand up. The amazing non-typical stood for a couple seconds before they both bolted off in the direction of the first two. A few more going-away shots and my morning was complete!
Step two was stopping to ask permission.....:)
Enjoy the pics.....morning of a lifetime!!

Great pics of some nice deer.

However, step 1 should have been getting permission since you were crawling around in the guys wheat field. You don't just need permission for hunting, but photography, fishing, strolling and picnics as well.

Very nice pics. I would have done the same as you. So the big question everyone wants answered is DID YOU GET PERMISSION?

Guys, I use the new Nikon D5000. Im forever tinkering with the settings, especially in low light like this morn, but for the most part I had settled on;
Exposure 1/320
Ap F5.6
ISO 400
