My first thought was "chimera". I have no idea where I know that from; one of those little nuggets of info that get stored in the brain- in my case, pushing out stuff that I need to remember, but don't.:)
Since a few other folks said "ratfish", I Googled it & found out the names are interchangeable monikers for the same fish- the fish in the pic.
Sure doesn't look like you got much of a fillet off the tail section...

I think the first one is some type of anglerfish...and the sad looking one is a blobfish.

the first one looks like a deep sea angler; but are those teeth really big, the fish is about the size of your finger i think...

As others have stated, it is a ratfish or Chimera. They are quite common from deep inshore (and offshore) waters on the Pacific coast. They have big incisors, just like a rodent, hence the name. Usually have to be fishing in >200 feet of water to find them.

For those that have not caught them before, they also have this lovely tendency to create a large amount of slime once you start handling them. It will hang off them for a foot or more. Mmmmmmm.

The picture is deceiving making it look longer and skinny, but I am still sticking with my original guess.

Ya I know. I have wanted to target them for a while. Occasionally they stray further north but most of my salmon trips are out of Langara.

Still...nothing like getting 20 - 18 pound albacore for sashimi!

i think mackeral. or something in the tuna family. ive caught those before when i was a kid and lived on the island. but i remember somebody saying it had to do something with it being an el nino year and warmer ocean temps. i could be wrong however
