ive had luck with almost everything in my fly box. they are hungry and less picky. I have also caught some decent sized whites. (i stopped fishing for whites about a week ago. Personally i will wait till after they stop spawning to fish them again) however there are a few flies that i have seen head over heels more action on. you will have to excuse me as i dont know the names of the flies yet, but royal coachmen see above average number of hits but the one that gets about 80% of my hits is this green fly that has some short hairs at the top to look like a head and then a band of gold spiraled down the body with a couple of dark hairs out the back with white tips for a tail. its a common fly i just dont know the name of it. i will look for a picture. they come in green and red but its the green that they like to impale themselves repeatedly on
also these guys have caught the bigger of the whites that i have caught:

Well I havent targeted mountain whitefish in over 20 years......and I am going to the mountains for this weekend. thought I'd bring the fly rod along. I think a lot of the streams are closed for trout, but some are open to whites. even C&R would be nice. Although theres nothing like fresh fried mountain whitefish......
we always caught them on the coachmen too in BC. I'll stock up on some flies before I head out.
thanks for the info!

Try a small red or orange San Juan Worm, bead head Prince nymph, most smaller wet flies should work. There is a simple fly that I tie that I just call the Maggot fly; a little tag of silver tinsel, off white seal dubbing (or something similar that shimmers a little), & a white bead for a head. I tried to take a pic of one but my camera doesn't zoom in enough to do it justice lol. With this fly I outfished my buddy who was using a spinning rod & real maggots a few years ago!

I have something like that, but no white bead....I get the jist.....an excuse to go get some cool wet flies. I have a few ice flies that look like pink scuds? hmmmm lots of fun to try them out.
if I actually catch anything, will come back with pics!
thanks again:)

I have my own ties, I have new patterns to try out so I'll hold off posting any until I try my new batch. But really, any flies will work. Small egg patterns seem to work pretty intense. I've caught em on doc spratleys dead drifted, all the standard nymph patterns like czech nymphs, stonefly, GRHE, pheasant tail, etc. If you got some of those unknown wal mart flies that don't imitate anything, now is the time to put em to use.

Jensen Eggs work like mad. Keep in mind they are considered bait with the scent thats in the jar. Just hook them on a size 10 egg style hook. They stay on quite well even when fly casting.
