Have been out a couple times in the last few year and about four years back we saw about 70 elk on the base. Got drawn two years ago and never saw any. Wondering if it worth a return for another hunt.

South east side of base near Patricia Hill, and the community pasture..

I lived in Edgerton and there are about 200-600 Elk total in the area..

Lots of pressure there the past few years with the creation of the super zone, deletion of the split draw dates, increase of the length of the season and the increase of tags given out.
With the increased pressure, a guy sure doesn't see the elk out of the base or eco area's as much as he used to.
I imagine it will only be worse this year as they increased the bull and cow tags.

You can definetly get an elk there but its not as easy as it used to be.

I was in for Bull last year. 6 days, walked the entire lower 1/2 of the camp and the annex probably twice and never saw an elk. About 35 moose but no elk. There was a bull taken in the primitive weapon season, and another bull in the second week as far as I know, two cows taken in the week I was there. Very difficult to hunt as they seem to hang out where you cant go (go figure right)

I love hunting in the camp but the elk seem to be pretty elusive in there. I think as they get used to the super zone and the pressure in the camp it may either get easier to see them out and about, or they will retreat to the PDA for a couple weeks in Dec ;)

I think season wise and area also my next tag will be in the superzone.

Super zone? It's been a couple years since I've hunted the base, what is the super zone? A new area of the camp?

Last year I was hunting on the base under the "Land Owner" tag, and never
saw any Elk during the first rifle season, but during the cattle round-up in the
end of Oct. in the extension we pushed a small herd out of the bush on the
west end of Breed Ford. One of the bulls was probly in the 300 class. Not big
by no means, but on the base you can't get two picky with Elk.

there are some good bulls in that area....but good luck. i sure wouldnt burn my priority on a tag there. i have hunted the base 9 times and have seen one herd of elk once and a single bull another time. they know very well where they are safe and where they arent.

The superzone is 5 WMU's around the base (south).

When we hunted deer during the first rifle season in camp wainwright last year,we never saw any elk but we saw heavy elk trails going in/out of the "permanent Danger Area" thats closed off to hunting permanently...Go Figure.

I work on the base, for Range Control. We do see elk, at all times of the year, but, it's the last place I'd burn my elk priority. JMO. They move too far, too fast, and your opportunities are rare. I think the super zone, or somewhere like WMU 936 would be a better bet.

We spent time of Sat. looking for a Angus Bull south of the Annex, with all the miles we
put on the horses, we never saw any Elk, Moose or Whitetails, only a lone Mule Doe.
There was a bit of deer sign , but I never say any Elk tracks or rubs etc.
