I don't know about a rifel, but for the reasons you give, I would recommend a rifle in 243 or 260.

My kids are using a 7mm-08 in a NEF single, youth model.
120gr'rs at 2600fps are light in recoil but deadly out to 200yds. on most anything in the deer/yote relm.

If he is only going to deer hunt then .243...If you plan on moose and elk i would look at a 308 or 7mm-08 in a remington 700 youth or savage youth package...you cant go wrong with any of them...just remember the scope is #1 if he cant see it he cant hit it . So dont cheap out on a scope get something with good E/R 3.5 inchs. GOOD LUCK:wave:

You can't miss with the 25-06, specially with the bullets selection we have today. Flat shooting, hard hitting, excellent on coyotes, deer, elk, and I have even shot 3 moose with mine.
However, I also have a 243 which has treated me very well with respect to knocking down coyotes.
Good luck with your decision.

I have a tikka 25-06 that my dad gave me when i was 14 man does it shoot well, very little kick i am now looking to buy another tikka or a sako in a 300 but will always keep the 25-06 if u reload u can make some amazing bullit combinations. great first time gun and tikkas have a good price are light wieght and have great outta the box accuracy. i put a 3200 elite 4-12x40 scope on it.
