What a hunt! Opening day in the Alberta foothills and I set out with my brother in law to a spot we have been scouting for about a year. Every time we've been in there we've seen game. - Moose, deer, Black bears etc.
This guy was moving along a ridge by himself and we picked our spot perfectly. He didn't go down easily - man are they ever tough! It took us most of the day to get him out.

Thanks to my hunting partner for sticking it out and helping me drag this guy out.

I have been working hard on a full story. It has been a long time coming and I am over the moon with excitement. I think he must be pretty old as he has no teeth on the top. (he still has his ivories but they are worrn down and loose. I wonder if he would have made the winter. Any idea on how old he might be?

Congratulations on a fine first elk.

BTW, no ungulate has front teeth on the top. They use their front bottom teeth to pin the grass/browse to a firm gum plate on the top. They then pull and the bottom teeth shear the food off.

I struggled with this but I would have to sell a pile of stuff to afford a shoulder mount. I decided on a european mount. I still caped him out for practice - and if I win the lottery.
