300 win vs 300 rum

hey guys, Im looking to get a new gun but cant decide on the sako 75 300 win or the remington xcr in the 300rum, not scared of the recoil.

Then goto a Sako 338 mag...much better ;)

I have a Sako75 300 win and it has been my most accurate best hunting rifle of numerous brands. It seems to weigh more as the years go by as I am a walk and stalk hunter but you can't go wrong with them. Can't help you on the Rem but they have a good rep as well.

ok.......someone has to stick up for the RUM's my as well be me. I've got a xcr changed over to a laminate stock that is bedded and free floated. Its THE best gun I own. Its a tack pounder, and the kick isn't too bad. Its not the 300 you asked about, but it is the ultra mag.

Get Sako 75... best if in SS synthetic. They don't make them any more and I don't like new 85 in synthetic ...feels like Tikka Lite.
I think that 300Win Mag is excellent caliber...180 grain premium bullet and You good to go for all North American game.

If you don't reload,I would not even consider the 300ultramag,as factory loadings are very limited,and are very mild.If you reload,have access to a range where you can practise regularly out to 500 yards,and are willing to practise regularly to develop and maintain the skills necessary to precisely place bullets at over 400 yards,the 300ultramag can offer an advantage at longer ranges.For the average person,the 300win mag is a far better choice.

I have the 300 RUM in the XCR. love it, not to bad to shoot very accurate (reloading my own) And vey flat as stated above. My opinion no better caliber. Have fun with that comment boys lol !:)

Between the two choices, I'd go with the Sako, just because.
I prefer the 75 to the 700, and the 300 mag to the Rum.
Handload for both BTW.....

I have been shooting a 300RUM for about 3 years now, a CDL, LSS, and SPS....all nice guns. Recoil I find quite similar to my buddies Winchester 70 in 300 win mag. In my opinion, for what that's worth, if you can comfortably shoot a 300 win mag you can shoot a 300RUM. Guess the biggest benefit being that if you decide you want more out of the gun, you can get it in the RUM with practice and load testing....although in a pinch for ammo at hunt camp I am sure a guy would have better luck coming across some win mag ammo!

I fully agree with SJ on this one. But I'm getting 3240fps out of a 200 grain Accubond in a 1" group.....there is advantages to the RUM.

I own both of these calibers and I now prefer the 300rum witch is in a Rem XCR I also had a break put on it by dave henry. The ultra is a very flat shooting rifle and if your a hand loader you can work up alot of good loads. After alot of shooting I feel safe with 500 yard shots with it.

I gotta go with the ultra mag. Mine is a CDL with a LSS laminated stock on it. One word of advice is to use the 200 accubond-very accurate in the 300 ultra.

thanks guys for the input, not sure which way im going , but i do know the rum is ahead by a hair, I do like my mags, as all my guns are mag except one and im trying to add a 30 cal to list.

hey Stand Junkie, how is the recoil on your RUM after you put the break on? Not to steal the thread but hs anyone tried a Knoxx stock on one of these 300 RUMs yet? Also wondering what kind of recipies you guys are cooking up for the RUMs?

Go with the 300 win mag if you want a all around hunting rifle. But if you want a gun for big game ie. Moose and Elk then skip the 300 RUM "Poor mans Weatherby" and step up to a Weatherby 300Wby Mag or a 30-378Wby Mag the King of .308 Caliber mags.

As someone that has owned both,I can assure you that the 300ultramag will produce about 100fps to 125fps more than the 300wby.Ammo is available for both at many locations,although the selection is limited.Weatherby brand factory loads are more expensive than the 300 ultramag loads that I have seen.

As I posted,the 300ultramag will outperform the 300wby.As for the 30-378,it will add about 100fps to the 300ultramag,but recoil is noticeable harsher,barrel life is shorter,and both brass and ammunition are very expensive.

I am not trying to start anything here just curious as to what you get for velocity out of a 300 Rem Ultra with a 180 grainer in a 26 inch tube?
