Is there any place a person can go with in 30-40 minutes of Calgary to ice fish?
Thanks

The only place I can think of would be Chestermere.
I guess depending on where you were in Calgary, Bruce Lake might be within that distance as well.

If you do not plan on keeping fish then try Eagle lake by Strathmore.

Chain Lakes west of Nanton is pretty popular, although it might be a little bit longer than a 45 minute drive.

Others worth trying tho not always the best would be Carbon pond for perch and pike, Ghost and Bearspaw res for trouts and whitefish, and Sibbald pond for brookies and rainbows.

Cheers.

Chain Ice isn't good right now, give'er another 2 weeks.

heading out for an ice check all over Southern Alberta on Thursday, will report and hopefully take decent pics of ice-type (damn snow).

I second the post about Sibbald. Last year at this time it was really easy with the ice there to catch rainbows and brookies before they winter killed.

Considering I live in Calgary and do quite a bit of ice fishing I have never heard of Squaw or Bruce lakes. Where are they?
I would have said Mc clean pond or Winchell lake. Maybe even Sibbald lake if it hasnt winterkilled yet.

Bruce is east on 566 (Balzac road) between Highway 9 & 21. I have taken some larger pike from there in the winter but have not fished it for a few years.

Just remember to plug your nose when you drill holes through the ice! YUK!

Is there actually fish in that lake? I have been fishing a few times there and have gotten so much as a bite.

I think it's worth adding an extra 20 minutes and head to Macgregor, Pine Coulee, Chain South, Severn (though the ice isn't so good yet), Travers (an extra hour), Newell, Keho, Clear, Ghost....

I might add that Badger lake is not too far from where GustavMahler is talking about, and there is some massive pikes pulled out of there. Their anual fishing derby has about 20 prizes, and if your fish isnt 20+lbs you dont have a chance of winning.
