Great day on the ice, not really a great start, got stuck trying to pull another truck out, then Braun locked his keys in the car and while he was looking for something to open it some lowlife clocks the front bumper of his car and does some damage. Once on the ice tho, a few flags, then we moved to an old creekbed and started getting hits. Missed most, got to watch some cool stuff on the underwater cam, like whites, pike, walleye and maybe even a perch. end tally, 1- 3 or 4 pound walleye for Braun, and one nice pike for me. I have to say, it was fun watching Braun running across the slick ice for his tipup, with a cast on one leg !!!!Rematch tomorrow at first light!!!

Hey Wayne,

The gator kind of looks like a baby. Hopefully in the morning you will find something bigger then an 8lber or so. I wish I could meet up with you guys but I don't have a full day to head out on the ice tommorow.

Good luck finding that monster gator.

Yes, there must always be one of you, mustn't there? I have to start wielding my "ignore list" even more aggressively. These silly arrogant comments just PMO.

Maybe if Wayne was a little person, or had small hands, you could guess 3.5lbs. The pike Wayne is holding is most certainly significantly larger than the only 3.5 pounder that I've caught.

It is hard to judge with the perspective and the way his fingers are spread, but I'd estimate between 6 and 7 pounds (based on Wayne's paws). Not huge, but a very good eating size from my POV.

thousands. it is fairly long, but doesn't look too thick. could be the camera angle, and holding it out like that makes it look bigger in a picture. Not trying to be a jerk, maybe I underestimate most of my fish then. Gonna have to start a new thread so I don't hijack this one. Anyways, nice fish!

Here here! I don't expect to catch trophies or jumbos. Getting out and catching something is good enough for me. :) (Of course, if a big fish decides to attach itself to my line I'll be more than pleased.)

HIt the ice much earlier today, within 10 feet of our spot yesterday. Set up Brauns new tent for the maiden voyage, worked great, hes very happy with it. We did find that a little buddy heater is not enough to heat a 6 by 6 tent, even on a relatively warm day. Had a crapload of fish showing off on the camera, watched a man in a legcast do sprints across glare ice everytime the flag on his tipup went, which was fairly often. Watched a burbot chew on his hook while he sat there with buck fever and didnt set the hook, but it was awesome to watch anyways. Saw whites cruise by the camera, followed by a walleye, who took off full speed when a pike followed it past the camera then came back for a closer look and stared down the camera for a few seconds.
I was fortunate to hook into one fish, I was rather happy to see it was a little bigger than yesterday's hammerhandle. Actually its one pound shy of being double the weight. I figure at this rate 3 more fish and I will have the new record if they keep doubling. It was a great weekend, fishing slow but entertaining with the nice fish for me and the afternoons worth of adrenalin high

And I have decided I do like the 60 pound fluoro leaders and quickstrike rigs I made up. The fish today took the hook just deep enough that the fluoro was in contact with the teeth, and I couldnt find anysort of mark on the leader. The crimp on sleeves worked great and the snap style I was using for the first time stood up to the fish as well.
A bonus of Catch and Release fishing I have found with pike, when they slime your icehole, it doesnt freeze over again.

Very nice pike Wayne. When you drill holes side by each like you did, does the auger bounce around or is it hard on it? I never thought of that before. Who needs a 10" or bigger if thats all it takes. Thanks for the great pics!

WayneChristie

Kim that was in Brauns 4 man tent, and the little buddy heater didnt quite cut it for something that big, even with most of the ice covered. I have been using my sunflower heater in the 6 man and it keeps it pretty warm. Need a full sized floor in it tho. The double holes work great, I drill them both at the same time, just overlap the second one a bit and drill them alternately til you are thru the ice. You get pretty wet this way, but I had no problem landing the bigger fish with the double hole. You just have to be careful you dont step in one.

Good point Wayne, I drill double holes all the time but I usually drill one hole all the way through then the second which is not only difficult to do but seems pretty hard on the auger since I'm drilling all that new ice plus all the water & slush from the first hole! Sometimes common sense leaves town when I show up:1041:
