I don't have one currently and I was in a tent last year with a couple AOF guys when theirs started on fire...pretty freaky...

We are using either a sunflower for super cold days or this guy mostly because it heats the tent good but we also can cook on it.

The Portable Buddy heater (not the little buddy or the big buddy, the one in the middle) might work well for you. It doesn't really have enough juice for my 6-man, but I suspect it would keep a 4-man toasty.

I use a Big Buddy with the dual plates. They are about $150.I did use the single plate Buddy heater ($100)but it just wasn't quite enough for a 3 man Frabill Predator when it was really cold.
I like the Buddy heaters as I have never had a problem with them and they do have the low oxygen safety feature.

I just finished shopping around for a tent heater myself. At first it seemed like the buddy heaters were the way to go but after doing some research I think that these are overpriced for what they give you.

If you don't mind packing around a propane tank (remember that you can get 5lbs or 10lb bottles) get a tank top heater.

I ended up buying one from Canadian Tire for $60. Max 14,000 BTUs but you can adjust to much lower by using the low setting and then turning the propane flow down just enough to give the heater enough propane without it going out. It seemed pretty sweet in my garage but has not been tested out on the ice just yet.

This specific heater was in with the spaceheaters and baseboard heaters. There was a similar heater in the sporting goods section for $90!

I hope this is helpfull.

Cheers

I use the Coleman Pro Cat and it works pretty good. The BTU may not be as high as others but i don't like it baking in shack anyways. I have also used this unit in my Trailer as well.

Has anyone ever tried any alternative icefishing heaters?
I just bought myself a costco tent and also happen to be an "alcohol stove" enthusiast, im planning on working out some sort of heater that burns fondue fuel. *for those who have never heard of "alcohol stoves" just search it on google, you will find LOTS!

Only reason im asking is too get some ideas for my own design. :)

Tight lines!

I've got two, a small 1500 BTU Coleman blackcat one that uses the 1lb propane tanks and a tank top sunflower type for when it gets cold cold that puts out a max of 12000 btus.

Haven't tried either ice fishing yet since this is my first year back but I think i'll be well covered having both of them.

You can pretty much toss the blackcat. I have one and its useless to keep anything warm.

i use the three btu level output sunflower in my shack, keeps me toasty on low after heating it up on high for a bit. Mine is a Mr. Heater brand. works good. my only gripe is when you mount it on a 20 lb bottle it takes a while for the floor to heat up.

My dad and a few buddies just use a tin canister (other metals (not lead) might work too) with a tin lid on it that just fits a role of toilet paper. Put a full roll of TP in and I think he just pours in methyl hydrate (I'm pretty sure that's what he uses....) It burns nice and slow but puts out great heat. Adjust the heat by sliding the lid on and off. 1 roll of TP should last you the whole season. The trick is to find the right kind of tin canister with tin lid.

Cheepest heater you will ever find and works great!

Cheers.

I picked up a 30,000 btu kerosene last year at canadian tire. I can sit in my 8 man frabill on -30 days in a t-shirt. Get about 12hrs on $10 in kerosene. Best purchase I ever made.

Hey nicemustang ive got a 3000 BTU BlackCat and love it, it worked great in my Yukon in all but the coldest outings. And for those days a flower is used.
So Id happily take it off your hands if its useless to you:evilgrin:;):)

Has anyone built a stand for the sunflower Mr.Heater tank top heaters? I'm looking to get the bottle outside to free up a little more space in my 4 man. Either that or I got to pitch the 6 man to the wife :sHa_sarcasticlol:
