How did you hook up the abs? Did you cut it at a 45 on a mitre...Oh and nice by the way...

I built two slammer type automatic fisherman's last year for my long rods and I was quite happy with there performance. Had a 90% hook-up rate. I will take some pictures and post here. They cost me $23.95 including the rods(cheap Walmart brand):sHa_shakeshout:Time to get the hard water gear ready to go:sHa_shakeshout:

dumb question, how does it work? fish pulls hard enough to pull line out of release clip and then rod whips up to strike?

thanx

You got it simple as that.

Good stuff horsetrader,, I have been looking at the ones similar to this at C.T. and Wallmart but just couldn't bring myself to pay the $18.00 for them. I have been looking them over quite well and over the Christmas break I was going to build a couple. This is a very simple version of that model only missing the flag which a guy doesn't need anyways.. I was thinking if a guy wanted to he could just clip a bell on the rod tip if he wanted,, or some sort of small flag on the rod tip so it would catch the eye better from a short distance off..

I hope you don't mind if I use your idea and make up a couple..

Thx for sharing this one with us..

Here is some pics of the one I built last year. Works pretty good. All I have only used it on is pike. When the fish grabs the bait it pops the rod tip out of the release and sets the hook. The green arm falls back and makes a loud smack. This way I have a visual/sound so I don't have to watch for flags. The trick is to set the drag right to let the fish take a little line also. I still have a little tweeking to do and want to install a wind jigger to it. I am building a couple more for my nephew because he used it last season and did good with it.

i was interested in making one of these after seeing your idea and tried the down rigger clip but found the clip wouldnt release easy enough. i tweeked it a bit and tried to copy the auto fisherman so i could use a bobber, and this is what i came up with for free... cant wait to try her out http://i903.photobucket.com/albums/ac238/usie33/ice%20fishing/IMG_0160.jpg

Wow, the bends in those rods look like a fish lips' worst nightmare! :D They should go off like a bomb. Sweet.

They look good, how about some closeups of the release mechanisms?

You can use any idea I got.The bell idea is a good one I have a tendency to get distracted by all the bikinis while I'm fishing :):):)

On another note I think I need to make some of your tip ups :)

The release on mine is small brass 90 degree. Used a Dremel tool to make the release. I found that I had to use a rod with a teflon insert in the tip, this really helped on the release. The brass has to be polished and free of any burrs. On this one if I hang a 4 ounce weight and drop it 1 inch it will release. The other one will release with about 2 ounces dropped from 1 inch. The only thing is the danger zone around the front of the rod, if a fish hits and misses the hook-up that rod tip hurts:mad0100:

Ok hello all from windy montana
I have a youth fishing club at a local
middle school and i am shop teacher.
We won't get ice usually here in montana till end of
november. This would a great project for
my kids to build. i am having a little problem
seeing what you use for a trigger to release.
any and all pictures would be great.

I'd be interested in having a better look at the release as well. :)
