Has anyone ever hunted with Hog Wild out of Mayerthorpe? If so how was the hunt? Did you shoot big hogs?
Any info would be greatly appreciated, also some photos would be great!

Id like to know too. Some may not agree with these hog farms, but I look at it as one less to escape, lol.
From what i understand it is cheaper done in a group. And I would like to try it in July for my birthday.

I have a friend that did a hog hunt here in the province. I'm not sure where he did it but it was not that far from Olds. I was having coffee in timmy's when he got back and he was still pumped. He said it was the most exciting hunt he'd been on in a long time and although it was expensive he said he'd do it again in a heartbeat. A dangerous animal and tight bush kept things interesting.

i did some environmental work out in that area. i met the people that own the hog wild specialties. They were great to work with and told me kinda how it works at there farm. they release a few hogs from the main farm into an area thats really wooded and thats were the hunts are done. they usually dont shoot large boars but i imagine you can shoot one for the right price. I know he had a big boar right in the entrance of his house, it was shot by someone and he kept the skin for a full body mount. most animals shot are probly younger females or males.

Ive heard of places like Hog Wild by drumheller / brooks?
Id like to join a group for a cheaper cost, use my slug gun as i believe they are allowed (slug gun, ,muzzleloader, bow, crossbow. If others didnt have i would lend out my slug gun in the group for this hunt. Just dont put a mark on it or Id have to put a mark on them, lol

Ive hunted them before, but not in Mayerthorpe! I hunted them in Goodsoil Saskatchewan. It was awesome, one of the funnest hunts ive ever been a part of. I spoke with Deb and Earl a couple days ago and they seem like great people. I was just kinda curious if anyone on this sight has hunted with them before? and if so lets see some pics! Ill post my pics once I do the hunt! Theres a group of 6 of us going!

You can use whatever you want to hunt them with, even your knife or spear! Trust me, it's all been done! LOL
Also you can also shoot whatever you want, boar, sow, young or old, you are paying for the hunt... Most hunts are under $1,000 a pig so I don't see what is expensive? That normally includes your stay in an old cabin right next to the house.
I've hunted there for years, and now am a friend of the family so I know Earl and Deb like a second set of parents. You won't find much better hosts anywhere else and they really know how to cook too if you would like them to make you a nice Wild Boar meal!
Best to just call them and go over anything your curious about. It's alot harder than you think using a bow, but I would recommend at least trying it for the first day to add to the fun of the hunt. www.hogwild.ab.ca
Check out their hunting section and you'll find lots of nice pictures of the area and type of pigs you can hunt. Here's mine:

I emailed them a few month back for pricing and I think a regular hog is like $700 and I think around $900 for a trophy boar. I'm thinking of going in the spring or in 2012 for college grad.

I'm up for it. But for taxidermy purposes....wouldn't winter hides be better than summer?

Nice one Sparx, how much did your hog weigh? Also how big of an area do you hunt the hogs in? and how many hogs would they have in there?

Thanks guys! He was a rare one the way his tusk on the one side didn't grind off and started to dig back into his hide on the face....
He weighed around the 350lb mark, nice big boars weigh 300-400lbs. They don't look like they are big until you go up to your kill and then wow, the size really shows...
The best time to go in Earl's suggestion is normally January to February I believe overall, but best to double check with him. In December the boars get stinky into a heavy rut, so your chances of fair meat on a boar is pretty low, but guys still do it every year. They have hunters year round, you may need a gun in July Bigbore cause it's so dense in the bush and hard to hunt them because of such.
They have the main pig area, over 350 acres, then the hunt area they transport a number to. I believe it's about 75acres all heavily wooded with treestands and trails about. I think that area is good for a group of 5 guys, but they can accomodate any size of group up to 15 guys from what I've heard. Lots of guys go there for stag party's and it's a blast!
Maybe if you want BigBore I can setup to come down and help guide your group whenever you go? Normally Greg, Earl's son, my uncle Ken do the guiding. If the group is big enough Greg and I can guide you guys around the good spots and help you pick out a quality trophy! Lots of nice color variations out there!
And yep, your right James M! That's about right for the pricing, but what most guys forget is lodging is included and they offer wicked meals at a dirt cheap price. Even if you opt out on shooting one, Earl can set you up with some meat in place already processed and professionally packaged ready to go. That's basically what I do now, look for a nice big boar, and if not, still get to take some meat home. Where else a guy can get that opportunity when hunting??? LOL

Sorry, forgot to mention to that they put in a number of hogs with types and sizes you ask for in the smaller pen. Normally you have 5 paid hunts, 5 pigs go in there... They bring them up in traps and let them go a few days before you hunt to get used to the area. It gets really exciting in there after one is shot, they know the game plan and really put your hunting skills to the test!

i might just plan this for fall, wow sounds like a hoot, Maybe even take out a long bow or recurve. I just hear the meat is like candy and I want some in the freezer!!

Definitely take out the long bow!!! That'd be awesome! Bring the slug to seal the deal on the last day if your being too picky ;)
My advice for meat quality is a average looking sow, I've ate some boars that were tasty, but it's hit or miss like a big WT buck in rut....

Definitely not a problem to use firearms! Just keep in mind here, as frowned apon by members it is an enclosed area so you do want to create a "hunt" per say. Using a bow for the first day or two will allow you to understand there is a hunt involved and it is a challenge. If you just want to walk out into the main pig pen and shoot a pig 300yds away to try out a new guy you can do that too. It's all up to your discretion guys! They are all for any type of hunt you wish to accomplish. Some real dandy's get taken with the firearms for obvious reasons, all depends what you want. Remember, you're paying for the hunt, you call them and let them know what you want and they will cater to you the best they can!
These pigs are tough, rarely do they get killed with one arrow or one rifle shot. On average I would say 2-3 shots of either weapon, the rifles seem to get the better placed shots, but the arrows allowing more faster bleeding. My big boar took 5 arrows by the time it was all said and done, even bounced one off between his eyes at 15ft away with 70lbs draw!!! First one went behind the ribs quartering away all the way through the lungs and heart!

Then i will plan for something between now and Feb.2012, and have a new bow built just for this hunt. Usually get my bows named under the clearcoats to which species they are built for. And then bring a gun for the last day or two.

Love those fenced hunts. BigBoar, as a proud "indigenous" Canadian, I would have thought that you would be able to sniff them out, track them, and then take them with the stick & string, or am I wrong? This all being outside of a penned area.:character0175:

I guess Living off rez and raised in a white family all my life gives me different needs and wants? May be penned, but its money going to a family business. Not like I do it all the time, ive been wanting to do it for 10 years, but havent yet. I guess being a proud indigenous canadian i could also drop a herd of elk, 40 deer, drop nets in a few lakes to fill my families freezers too. But for now ill just balance the idea of shooting some pigs possibly with a group of guys for some laughs , good times and memories. :)
Now.. all jokes aside. Im in if some people want to talk about a group hunt at Hog Wild in the future...... :)

I don't get what the big deal about the "pen" is all about??? Not like it's whitetail and elk your hunting just cause you can't find them in the wild. This is a species that if you don't hunt them in this pen in this province your not going to get the chance anywhere close for the dollar no matter what, so who cares? I was worried about that at first myself, but when you do it with a bow, it isn't as easy as you think...

Our group has been going on an annual Spring hog hunt to Hog Wild Specialties for the last six years. Earl and Deb are great people and you feel as one of the family when you go there. We use rifles and it may be a "canned" hunt but believe me it is not an easy one. Also we have had a few of the guys get charged which brings the adrenaline up substantialy.
The meat is great and they have a guest house to stay in and will provide meals if you wish. I guarantee you will have a great hunt!!

www.hogwild.ab.ca I know it's safe to post this now as they pay for adds with Alberta Outdoorsmen and have their cabin littered with magazines for the same reason... They have ads in the regs every year as well in the back. I can't believe some guys can come in here bashing on them when they put back into the whole organization of hunting as well, all cause they think it's a canned hunt. Don't shoot the canned animals if they excape the fence then, they are tame! LOL, come try and pet one of these pigs!
On the same token, they had Pickles, a raised colored wild boar on the farm for a while and you wouldn't know he was from a wild stock! He stayed on the farm until he left to a new home. Them pigs can be super smart when they want to be!

Quite a few of the guys that I work with head over to Hogwild every year. They rave about it for weeks afterwards when they get back. I finally had a chance to go myself last March. Needless to say I was thrilled with the whole experience. I usually have to work like a dog to have any kind of success out in the field. The Hagmans rolled out the welcome mat and It felt awesome. One of the best and most memorable experiences I've had in two decades. I brought my vid cam with me and took a little bit of footage over there. I'm no expert on making movies but it'll kind of give you and idea of the experience that I had. Hope it helps & I'm pretty sure you won't be disapointed if you go.
