Coal Lake Report

Fished Coal yesterday caught 1 dinky jack. It was DEAD. Talked to several fisherman too and they said the same thing. Lots of people out. Sledding was pretty good though.

as much as I hate to agree with the 'dead' threads, i agree. went there again today, got completely skunked. again. not even a bite.
16" of ice near the south end.

that lake has certain spots. find them like I have and you can catch 120 a day. the only problem is out of mabye 500 fish ive seen only 3 over 62 cm

Coal lake is decent....

if you know where to fish on it.... interesting thing I realized last time out there.. and get this. Fish move around! :bad_boys_20:

There are still some decent ones in there I am sure, plenty of Hammer Handles as well though like most lakes.

Here is one that Ryanlookingforperch pulled out a few seasons back.

Although the last time I was at coal lake back in Feb, we only caught a few.

Gotta love this forum. 5 years ago Coal lake would average about 5-10 trucks on a warm day. I could catch a least 3 pike in the 8-12 pound range almost every time i went out. After being posted 500 times it now averages 50-100 trucks on a cold day. Everything 63+ is basically gone. That’s the norm now lake gets posted on AO = lake getting fished out.

yeah, pics of fish from a few years ago don't really help this discussion. I've caught some nice fish out of coal over the last couple of years also, but nothing lately. even this summer, it was nowhere what it used to be. Also, I was out there today, a nice day, and saw about 7-10 trucks, not 50-100.....

While thats true to a degree its also moronic to a degree. The size and quantity of pike in coal is due more too dropping water levels than too overfishing. If the sod farm quit pumping water out of the lake and we got more rain i believe coal has the potential to grow back into a really nice pike lake. I have also heard that the city of wetaskwin uses coal lake as its main water supply. As long as the water level is dropping the fishing will get worse! I don't know that much about the causes of lakes stunting but i do know the water level is a large contributer in the case of coal, everyone used to catch big pike out of there 2-3 years ago, guess what? the water level was much higher 2-3 years ago..

Anyway now im rambling/thread de-railing but it had to be said.

There isn't 'lots' of ice to drive on any lake yet. At this time of the season and with all the snow cover it really comes down to how brave/lucky you feel.

Went to coal on Sunday, Didn't have much luck only had one bite. Fish didn't seem to go well. For others as well, drove around and asked, all were negative replys:shark:http://www.outdoorsmenforum.ca/images/smilies/shark.gif

I dont mess around with crap lakes. I do fish good lakes but do a lot of fly ins and jetboating into places. If I do go out around here I never expect to catch much anyways.

Safety D, I rarely fish far from home and i always expect to catch fish when i go out, and i almost always do. Coal is a little slow right now but im hoping it will pick up! Beaumont pond has treated me good so far and im planning on trying leduc. The potholes west of the city are also usually pretty good! Chickakoo, spring, jackfishing, mink, etc usually produce a few fish per trip!

F Frenzy if you ever venture out its amazing !!! Ive caught over 100 pike in an afternoon ranging from 5 to 25 pounds. So many lakers your arms want to fall off and places so thick with walleye you just use a jig head with no hook on it to catch them. Id rather concentrate on that !!!!!

yep you want the biggest pike of your life. Go to Thurston. It is definitely not DEAD there !!!!!!
