Took a buddy out to Lower K for his first time ice fishing in Alberta, took us a while to find where the fish were hanging out but once we did they were KILLING Buzz Bombs and big white jigs turned out to be hands down my best day on the ice there ever.

First Fish of the day...

Buddys first Alberta fish, I may have spoiled him.

Looks like a fantastic day; good on you guys for finding where they're hangin' out!
From the last pic, doesn't appear to be a heckuva lot of ice.
How thick is it?

I wasnt with these guys, but I was out at lower K a week ago. after shoveling the snow off the ice for the tent.. the ice is black and wonderfully clear. once we put the tent down you could see your jig and tube dropping probably past 20-25 feet down. When you caught one, it was quite fun to watch them swimming around under your feet, yet almost earry at the same time.

All this, and the ice was 8-12 inches thick (sure doesnt look it but it is). Wonderful fishing, wonderful views, all and all great time on the ice.

There was a solid 11" of ice where we fished, but we also try to get as close to the open water and we feel comfortable fishing...oh no I've said too much ;)

You sure on those weights? 15 lbs is close to to the Ab record at 17lbs and change.

Most Bulls caught are in the 5-8lb range. As in the ones in the pics. Im doubtful your smallest was 10lb+...sorry

I dont mean to doubt you as well, but I have caught a 34" monster bully out of this lake who was just a tad over 10 lbs. Are you sure you didnt catch 2 brookies at the 2-5 lb weight? the only raindbows I have ever seen or heard of out of this lake are HUGE, but they are also like unicorns... hard to find, harder to catch.

I know a few guys who sit on that lake almost every weekend for the last 2 years and have only caught 2 maybe 3 rainbows ever.

Do you have any pictures of these fish id love to see them?

the rainbows are starting to reporduce in the streams because myself seen em spawning in there thats why there closed and yes its a possiblity that 2lb rainbows are caught there from spawning

i had two different days up there last summer with the family that we caught as many 8 to 12 inch rainbows that you wanted. two different days out of over a dozen attempts? also landed a bull well over 10lbs as well chucking bigger gear.

Do you guys who catch fish over 10lb weigh them on a scale or are you calculating from a length/girth measurement or some other method? I believe the fish are there, just curious.

I have a electronic scale and a net I will use to weight the bigger fish if its not too to cold out and wont effect their release, of the pictures I posted the biggest fish was 9.6lbs or something but I have caught them over 10 and weighed them.

This is my personal best thus far and was a little under 11lbs, Im 6'3 and 240lbs so Im not a small guy. I have seen fish caught by people Ive been there with that have topped 13lbs, but I myself have yet to get there.

would never want to harm a fish like that by hanging it off a scale. calculation. there is very nice bulls in that water. further to the smaller rainbow note also had other afternoons up there as well as the on the upper where small bows were taking caddis off the surface like crazy.

Wow nice catch! Those guys must have put up a good fight through the ice. I've caught some in the fall there and man they can put on quite the runs.

Well I guess I dont blame you for questioning my catch. However I do know roughly how big they were. I caught a 30 inch bull this last summer in the Old man that was around 8 pounds so I know roughly how big the three were. The rainbow I caught I could barely get my hands around him he was really heavy like a football. Of course the only time I didnt bring my camera was that trip ;( I am still kicking myself for forgetting it! As for the two Rainbows, yes they were rainbows not brook trout dont forget I said in my post somewhere up there not specificly the lower lake:)

Chubdarter I don't think you can compare a Kootenay lake fish to Lower Kan.
LKL fish of 27" are about 7lb. If you add a pound an inch for the next 5" it's usually pretty accurate.
Those big Kokanee eating fish have much greater mass than our wimpy Bulls

That is my observation as well insofar as LKL bulls are concerned.

Beautiful Bull trout Chubbdarter!

A good weight estimate for salmonids and char by lenght only is 10 lbs at 30".
Add 1 pound per inch after that. Skinny or fat fish, use the "Fisherman's Code": early to bed, early to rise, fish like hell, and make up lies. :)

Wow, a fellow anglers post great pics and share their stories and people can't wait to pick them apart. The pics are what is important and that they had a good time. Who care about if the weights are accurate.

You can have some incredible days with really big fish at LK and also a string of smaller fish. I have caught 4 lbs rainbows and then nothing that big for 5 years. I have also caught one 6 lbs Cuttie and have never hooked one bigger than 2 lbs since.

The great thing about LK is that you never know what is going to surprize you when you get there. One of the last places to guarantee big trout close to Calgary.

My biggest bull was just a hair over 32" long, the average Bull in that lake seems to run in that 22"-28" range and be a sold 4-6lbs of just fun to catch.
