These folks are fishing for fresh water smelt (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wagasaki) in Gunma Ken (province) Maibashi (city) about 150km northwest of Tokyo.

Tents and heaters but not advanced like here due to extreme lack of opportunity to practice the sport. Still there are a few die-hards who have to try. :)

Kinda looks like maybe that's where the idea for the Marmish rod came from.

never seen anyone catch fish with a flyswatter before! look at the advertising along the sides, wonder how long it will be before we see those at PCR?

That event in Korea is truly incredible! To my knowledge there are no such events as this in Japan. Ice fishing is carried out by very small numbers of people.

Here is a fellow fishing in a volcano. Note the same folding tent. Ice conditions not great.

Absolutely incredible bait at the end of the second video. Like to get them here.

The last part of the video here show a very springy steel bite indicator/rod (local Japanese?). Looks like people all over have the same idea.

But, my understanding so far is the Russians have first claim to the flexible metal bite detector but I am willing to be corrected by anyone with better knowledge.

I think we can get a very good indication from the name Marmish which sounds and is written very much like Mormysh (Russian for fresh water shrimp). Their jigs are Mormyshka and I believe are supposed to imitate the shrimp.

Again, if others have better info, please correct me.

Looks like a good way to get rid of small unwanted perch.

I like this idea! :) Get huge crowds out and hoist them little fellows out without limits in stunted lakes. But I wonder if even that would thin them down enough so the rest could grow? Hmmm?

x2 on that...i would even be afraid to drill a hole with that many people on the ice..you could collapse the whole thing.....
