deep snow right of the kinbrook launch, decent trail but 4x4 and some momentum needed. once you're out on the lake its not too bad. 3-4 inches and getting softer by the wind gust. spent a few hours this afternoon till dark, the kids caught some northerns drowning big herring. the boys spend the afternoon clearing the snow off the ice in front of the launch preparing for next weeks derby. spoke with one of the guys. 100 bucks a hole, all pre-drilled holes. also had a visit from the wardens out of brooks, on snow machines. nice couple of fellows.

So Dace they changed the way they the derby is run now? It use to be you went and paid like $40 for your derby ticket and could fish in any of the designated fishing areas. You could also run 2 lines. If they have changed it to all predrilled holes and $100 a hole fee I have a feeling this derby is going to collapse.

thats what i was told by one of the guys from the Kiwanis club which i understand is the organizer. he compared it to the pigeon derby from years past, which was the same concept.50% of the entry goes directly back the the club. the area thats been cleaned off is right off the launch. i don't believe the deepest holes are gonna be more than 10'. some guys like that concept, some don't. time will tell.

the 100 dollar holes are an extra feature, the rest of the derby is the same as before.

Lake Newell Ice Fishing 2011 Information
The 18th Annual Kiwanis Lake Newell Ice Fishing 2011 derby is slated for Febuary 19th and 20th 2011. Entry fees this year will be $40.00 for Adults and $10.00 for youth fishermen.

There will be over $20 000 worth of prizes available in 2011.

There will also be a 3 hour Northern Pike Mini Derby from 9am until 12 noon on Sunday. The entry fee will be $100.00 for the mini event.

Lake Newell Ice Fishing 2011 is a little better than last year for me, so far it has been very productive in producing a lot of fish, not to many tipping the ten pound mark as of yet.

Didnt even bother to try the access at the sailing club today, way too deep and slushy for my liking. the guy with the shack just off shore there had a hard time getting out even that far. Went on at Riddelback and it was slushy too, but manageable. dont try with a car. by 6 oclock it was super slushy, coming off the ice is getting bad, a nice hump then onto the mud. the track in is also deep slush and ruts. and dace no Im not in the Kiwanis but I do read the paper.
