Model '95 Winchester in 405 WCF, circa 1912.

Because I own one and it's such a cool old rifle. The history of the cartridge/ rifle alone is appealing. I like the challenge, limited to iron sights and throwing big chunks of lead. I've taken elk, black bear and deer with it.

I bought and used a 45-70 marlin guide gun this year. With the new hornady FTX bullets this round can be fairly flexible. For instance i shot a whitetail buck at lasered 150 yards and again at 170 for the kill, this was with a 2.5X scout scope. With a larger scope and the longer barrel (guide guns only 18") this FTX load could get you out to 250yards. On the other end of the spectrum I load 350 gr cast bullets on top of 15gr of bluedot powder for gophers in the summer. Man is that fun, no kick and the 350's are goin 1060fps! The best part is that gopher load is super cheap to shoot.Great for practice!

I love the guide gun in the thick stuff its very short and doesn't hinder you when lookin for that elusive buck in those really tight spots. Another thing to note is that the guide gun doesn't get caught on branches when you have it slung over your back or when riding a quad. I don't know about other guide guns but mine is extremely accurate. If you put a front rest close to the action and not out on the forend i can get under 1" 3 shot groups at 100yards. So it can hold its own in the accuracy department.

Versatile, handy and just plain fun to shoot is why i like the 45-70 and the marlin guide gun.

Marlin Guide Gun in 45/70. Carried it once last season and came close to taking a shot but passed because of poor light conditions. I also cast my own bullets for it, which to me is as much fun as shooting this rifle. I'm casting a 292gr. bullet two different 405gr. bullets and a 500gr. bullet. So far I've only developed a load for one of the 405 rnfp bullets.

45-70 GuideGun with handloads.Made a leather cartridge holder for the buttstock so theres always a half dozen hardcasts on the gun.Short ,fast handling and very cool.Used to pack the .300WSM a lot but now mostly pack the guidegun when Im not packing the bow.Shot a small 4X5 Muley last season w it(Barnes TSX 300gr hp handload)dropped on the spot.Nxt season hope to take something w the 405gr hardcasts. Also load 405 Rem's and Hornady FTX .Hopeing to get a Sharps someday!

444 Marlin here also. I've experimented with reduced plinker loads, and they are tons of fun. Also reloaded a batch of FTX's to replicate Leverevolution ammo. Now, I'm just waiting for some decent weather to spend at least a half day at the range with it. Darn it Honda, I wished that I knew you were looking for an M94, I would have offered it to you had I known. :)
