How about this for crazy eyes! Well, just the one eye was like this...the other one was normal.

Probably multiple treble hook injuries.

I also agree that it is from a hook injury.

We caught a 48" pike in sask with one eye that was clouded over and almost blue. Old girl was doing fine with just the one.

Looks to me like you took the walleye out of the tent and that glazed its eye over, which can lead to blindness. In this cold weather with windchill all it takes is seconds to blind a fish.

Geezle; you mentioned foam mats in another thread. Keep a couple of those available to lay your fish on to keep the eyes of your catch from freezing. That will also keep the snow and ice chips out of the gills.

Try to imagine what would happen to your face if someone or something shoved your face into a snowbank and held it there for a few minutes!

You might also give some thought to how screwed up your life would be if someone poked out one of your eyes, never mind the life of a predator that relies on all it's senses to keep alive.

As a slice of personal opinion, I rarely target pike as I have no intention of keeping them. However, that does not prevent me from handling them carefully if some toothy critter should try to bite off my jig . The notable exceptions to this are ice derbies and spring sight- fishing. With this I remove the treble hooks and replace them with a one single barbless with a welded o-ring (this keeps the hook in line with the crankbait/swim-bait). If the pike are hitting the lure broadside, then the hook goes on the belly. If not, then the hook goes on the tail. This will prevent the spare hook(s) from doing any extra damage. In fact, some lakes require this.

My tip-ups, if you can call a red and white wooden dowel that, have exposed spools so I can see exactly when the line stops and I can prevent old Mr. Esox from getting the anchovy into its gullet.

Having said that, it is inevitable that I end up keeping a pike or two some years. I do target walleye and as you know, a pike will eat anything. Releasing a badly damaged fish is tantamount to signing it's death warrant so I might as well be the predator that gets a couple of white meat filets.

Free (to stay in when it's -30)

I agree. Looks like to me a freshly frozen eye due to cold conditions. It only takes a few seconds to freeze an eye.

No reason to be poopy wayne, i've done it by accident before as well. It is what it looks like. And it may not have been you, but the guy that caught it before you too. Obviously the fish is still fine and hitting your lure. Walleye use their laternal line more that anything anyway which is why they prefer to hunt in the night.

Keep posting pics. Its nice to see pics instead of arguing all the time. We all learn something from the posted pics.

My advice, don't be so sensitive and post anyway. Who cares what everyone thinks, all that matters is what you do. I enjoy every pic you've posted so far, so pls don't stop!:snapoutofit:
