I just bought a new Savage 243 for shooting coyotes and have been reading different opinions on what weight bullet will shoot good out of a 243, I would prefer to shoot that new 58gr Superformance varmint bullet from Hornady but have read from different forums that a heavier bullet shoots better:thinking-006: Basically I want a flat shooting bullet that groups well. as I plan on shooting 300yrds plus. Any ideas or feed back would be great:)

Personally for the Savage I'd go a bit heavier, like a Speer TNT.
That is what we loaded oinmmy buddy's 243 and they were deadly out to 500.

I used a 100 gr sierre btsp in mine before i sold it. Very accurate, big enough for deer, plenty flat and deadly on coyotes.I tend to like medium to heavy for caliber bullets though.

i shoot the hornady 58 gr vmax out of 2 of my 243 rifles (rems) at over 3600 fps and both are very accurate, 1/2" or less at 100 yards. the nice thing with the speed you are able to get with the 58 gr bullets is when running shots come in to play....very little if any lead required for shots out to 300 plus yards. the short stubby bullets are limited in the bc department though, but for the most part i don't attempt shots past the 4-500 yard mark so difference is limited.

Good chance it will shoot well. Give it a try!

Personally, I'd be shooting a heavier, tougher, higher BC projectile out of a 243. Odds are on any 6mm projectile exiting 9 times out of 10 anyways. May as well shoot one that will drift the least and hold together on impact IMO.

Try the 70 gr Nosler Ballistic Tips, Sierra Blitzkings or Matchkings. All boattails and kill coyotes with a 2" high 100yrd sight in to over 300 yrds with no hold over. You should be able to push them close to 3500 fps which is fast enough.

I have loaded up the 58 grain Hornady for my BLR .243 and have very good accuracy at 100 yards 1/2" group. With 45 grains of Varget I can get 3600 FPS.

I am loading these speed demons for my Rem 700 HB 243 and around that 3600 fps I am covering three shots with a dime at 100 yards. For varmints it is ok but for deer I would head back to the 100 gr.

I have reloaded 55gr blitz kings, 70 gr Speer TNT, and a 60 gr Sierra bullet(they are a TNT style) along with the 58 grVmax. Best performer is the 58 gr. The others are no slouches either and all perform best at 3500 - 3600 fps. Prior to that speed and beyond that speed the groups stretch out.

Your gun will let you know which one it likes best.

define good:thinking-006:, it depends on a lot of things, is the gun factory?. is it free floated, is the action bedded? what is the trigger pull set at? what type of optics is there on the gun, define good :thinking-006:what are your expectations of good?

Try them and find out. Every gun shoots differently and the only way to find out is to try them.
There are certain factors to consider up front such as twist rate versus bullet weight and whether you want a bullet constructed to explode on impact or one that you want to pass through without very much pelt damage.
Heavier will be less affected by wind and carry energy further downrange but lighter will be faster and flatter for a shorter distance.
There are too many variables to be able to give you a definite answer. You'll just have to try them and see what happens.
Just remember that you'll have to sight in your rifle every time you change ammunition as your point of impact will change.

Good luck

Thanks for all the input guys:) so I picked up a box of Hornady 58gr V-MAX Moly to give a try, AS the Superformance varmint are hard to find right now(2 new) So I will take it out today and see how it shoots. What do people usually like to get there triggers set at for pounds pull? I don't want it super light but I don't want it stiff either.

What Savage did you buy? One with the accu trigger or was it one of the packages?
The packages are standard at 5 to 5.5 pounds.

Personally I like 3 lbs but I do have a couple at 4 lbs.

62 grain Varmint Grenades work for me. They are ripping out around 3650 fps and are well under 1/2 MOA. They aren't all thast great for saving fur so if that is a concern for you then pass them up.

They are on the other hand rather hard on gophers. It looks like a blast radius when you hit them. Mos tget substantial hangtime.:sHa_sarcasticlol:

Yeah I got one of the package deals, I changed the scope out right away though, for a more powerful one. And yeah I noticed the trigger pull is too heavy.

I shot a half box of 58g Vmax at coyotes, the other half at target, 'cause for me they were too explosive for pelts.

My 1-9 twist 700 .243 shoots everything from 55 gr BT's to 105 A-Max's with aplomb.

Yeah I see what you mean about not good for the pelts, I got a coyote on Friday with what I assume is the same results you we're getting:sign0161: They do seem to group good though on target, when I sighted my rifle in.:)
