Hey all,

Just got back from Tobin lake in Sask a couple hours ago and I wanted to share some info about our trip.

First off, it was COLD. The mercury hit a balmy -38 before wind chill. Lesser fishermen would have just stayed in bed but we'd just driven 8 hours and had 3 hours of sleep so we would not be deterred!

After a long day we retired for the night and got a wee bit more than 3 hours of sleep but 5:30 again came early and we headed out in slightly warmer temps (-25ish) that mother nature augmented with strong winds for us.

I was very happy with the results! Caught my personal best pike in both length and width but not on the same fish. Anyhow, here's some pics!

First fish of 2 on day one

And my second fish, also my longest of the trip. Anyone care to guess a length?

I was fortunate to have the hot tip-up on the second day and landed 5 fish, including this monster!

All in all a great trip, hard conditions to fish in but I think the results are totally worth it :)

Beauty! Did you weigh them?

Thanks for the comments everyone!

We didn't weigh any of them as it was too cold and we wanted them out of the water as little as possible. The heaviest one we estimate at around 25 lbs. The girth on that fish was unreal.

That thing is a monster! Beautiful fish. I wouldn't be shocked if that fish went over 25. What were the travel conditions like out there? Were you driving on the ice or on sleds?

Thanks!

The weight is just an estimate since we didn't put any of them on a scale... but I do know it was a heavy, heavy fish.

The conditions were pretty bad, lots of blowing snow and we got stuck a couple times getting off the second night due to drifting. We drove on with two trucks, one with tire chains, one without.

Out in the middle basically. To be honest it was hard to tell, we just went as far as the guys were willing to push the truck through the snow after we left the plowed section and tried to stay away from the existing shacks.

Pictures turned out great. I'm glad Sean got to take you there this year. The guys always have so much fun slamming the monsters out there every year. Too bad it was so cold though. I think Sean's legs are still sore from running after those tip-ups the whole time.

Was thinking the same thing! You don't see too many PIKE with GIRTH that big and yet still so long! That is easily 30lbs IMO.

Nicely Done...

Cheers,

Slannesh, you got to head out there with Sean and his brother? Man are you ever a lucky guy for those two to put you on fish like that!

for sure! clearly those guys know how to catch big fish other than rainbows (oh yeah and I guess burbot now too...) Most people have to pay those guys to show them how to catch fish like that!! It was a good trip for sure! I have caught a lot of big pike at tobin, the bigger one would have been close to 25 pounds...not 30 plus...

Good for you for releasing them!

Some may disagree but I would bet money that is a 30lb pike.

I have caught my share of big pike and IMO what pulls that fish past the 25 lb mark is girth (right through the length of the body). I had a 27 pounder caught near me a few years ago and he was definitely smaller than that. There are quite a few pike that have length but it is that girth that adds the lbs.

Regardless of what she weighs it was a great trip and the fishing definitely made the cold and the wind worth it :)

I'll for sure remember those fish and the trip in general for a very long time. Glad I got some good pics out of the deal... Unfortunately now I have to find a way to catch a bigger one!
