i was thinking yesterday at work about my favorite movie's and the characters in them, and was trying to decide which was the best performance i had ever seen. there have been a number of great characters played by better actors, but for me the the absolute best of the best was val kilmer as doc holliday in tombstone. absolutely lights out.

so who's your favorite character in a movie?

val kilmer was good, but id say second place after clint in unforgiven. so dark at the end scene. the real will munney came back out, "He should have armed himself if hes going to decorate his saloon with my friend".

" ive always been lucky when it came to killing folk"

also the joker in the latest batman was i think the biggest thing since sliced bread and darth vader

yup...val as doc holliday...awesome

dirty harry
The Duke of course in True Grit
Jeff Spicolli
Clint Eastwood in Unforgiven
Kurt Russell ("Jerk that smokewagon and go to work!!"...awesome)
Tom Hanks Forest Gump

and ya know what...I gotta add Pa Kettle. Hilarious.

SO many more I'm sure I'm missing..and sorry for going over the limit. But I think I have to agree...Val Kilmer was amazing as Doc Holliday. I've watched that show probably 15X.

Funny you mention Where The Buffalo Roam...I've had that movie here forever and for some reason I've never gotten around to watching it. I could see Bill Murray doing a pretty good job with that part as well.

it's interesting that the actors we boys appreciate are almost exclusively male, and the few females listed are, I suspect, there mainly because we like to look and drool. No females you think are just fine fine actors? No Meryl Streep and her ilk?

I was noticing that too....so I'll throw in a few of my favorites:

Sigourney Weaver in Alien(s)
Jody Foster in Silence of the Lambs (and Anthony Hopkins was stellar in that)
Catherine Zeta Jones in Intolerable Cruelty

I'm also big on Clint, you can hardly pick a western he wasn't great in: Good the Bad & the Ugly, Pale Rider, Unforgiven, Outlaw Jose Wales. Also Gran Torino was good....

Hanks in Saving Private Ryan/Forrest Gump

Nick Cage in Windtalkers

Jack Nicholson in The Shining (Heeeeeeere's Johnny!!) & One Flew over the Cuckoos nest, Bucket List

Favorite "Character" in a movie,, I beleive the question was.. Some are getting favorite actor and character part mixed up..

For me there are a few but I would start with.

From the God Father movies.
Don Vito Corleone, Played my both Marlon Brando and Robert Diniro
Michael Corleone, Played by Al Pacino.

From The Good Fellas
Jimmy Conway / Robert Diniro
Henry Hill / Ray Liotto
Tommy Divito / Joe Pesci

True Grit - 2010
Rooster Cogburn / Jeff Bridges, The Duke doesn't even come close as an actor compared with Bridges in portraying this charecter..

Tombstone.
Doc Holiday / Val Kilmer

Almost forgot has to be one of my favorite characters
Matt Quigley / Tom Selleck

The characters played by Viggo Mortensen & Ed Harris had some of the best dialogue I've ever heard in a movie. Loved some of the sudden violence as well.

All-time favourite character in a film? Gotta be Han Solo in the three *real* Star Wars films.

Second is likely Billy Crystal's Harry in When Harry Met Sally...

It's tough to settle on a truly great female role because Hollywood is so focused on making fantasies for boys. A few real standouts, though are Helen Mirren as Queen Elizabeth in The Queen, Marie-Josée Croze in Denis Villeneuve's Maeström and maybe Paz Vega in Lucía y el sexo.

EDIT: Judi Dench as M in the later James Bond films. Fabulous.

For me my all time favorite is Robert Shaw as Captain Quint in the original Jaws. The lines and delivery are spectacular. From the top of my head it's goes like.....

Here lies the body of Mary Lee,
Lived to the age of a hundred and three.
For sixteen years she kept her virginity,
Not a bad record in this vicinity.

or......

Y'all know me, y'all know what I do but it's a bad fish !

Oh I'll catch him all right but I value my skin more than 3 thousand dollars.

It's gonna cost ya 10 thousand, yep 10 thousand dollars..

But for that you get the head, you get the tail.

You get the whole DAMN fish !

I think the man was a brilliant actor, he drew me into his characters and captiviated me.

For a female role Meryl Streeps portrayal of Julia Childs in Julie and Julia is sheer genius. To take on a character as big as life like Julia Childs with the quirky accent and mannerisms who is as well known to everyone as Childs was and pull it off just blows me away.

Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada. "That's all..."

And another vote for Sandra Bullock in The Blind Side.

Downey Jr., is an excellent actor. Hopefully he can keep clean and put out some more good work.

Yeah, he's a total legend. A little known fact is that for FMJ, he was only there to coach and advise the actor that was cast to play the drill instructor. Ermey was so outstanding, that Kubrick (the director) sh!tcanned the actor and gave the part to Ermey.

Also, the gun nuts here - did any of you catch his TV show about weapons? It was called Lock n' Load.
