I was on Facebook today and someone that I went to school with had a picture of a doe on her page and a little story about how it's been hanging around her neighbourhood in Geulph, ON. Judging by the looks of it it's pretty much starved to death. She had absolutely no idea that anything was wrong except that the doe didn't seem timid at all. Anyway, the neighbourhood is going to pull together to try to fatten it up a bit.

I've never seen a deer this skinny before. :(

Me too, it's been a hard winter for a lot of critters this season :thinking-006:

thinking there "might" be something other than starvation going on there....

I think Hal53 is right. My uncle lives in Guelph and he says they haven't had that bad a winter this year.

There seems to be lots of green grass available so i'm thinking something else as well.

Here a few pictures of deer that are starving. These deer are standing on rows of round bales. You can count about 300 here at any one time. There are 4 to 6 dead deer in the stack yard evrey morning. You can see some of the dead. They were to far gone when they made it to this yard. With the snow we have had and the cold in this part of Sask. this winter, the deer herd is going to be at an all time low. I would think the crop of fawns this year will be next to nil. If SERM is managing the deer herd properly in this part of the province there should be no non-resident season and I question if there should be a deer season at all. By the way, SERM will not pay anything for the damaged feed. There is a small payment for the feed they consume.

Once a deer reaches a certain level of starvation, it will not recover, even if fead. that sweetheart has reached the doomed levels in her bone marrow, and it is only a matter of time. to bad!

What is the verdict then? Do you fellas figure that she should call the F&W to put the doe down or just leave it be? Once I told her that the doe was in trouble she and the rest of the neighbourhood were going to feed it all kinds of vitamin filled carrots, apples, etc.

On a side note, I've heard that a doe's body will actually start to consume the nutrients from the fetuses of her fawn in order to survive. Any truth to that or is it just an old wives tale?

Dave, I have heard the same thing but I think that they abort and drop the fetus to conserve nutrients for themselves rather than consume the fetus internally.

Yeah, that would make more sense.

The ability to abort? Learn something new everyday. Interesting pics. Hope the populations dont take a beating this year

Don't know if its true or not but I also heard a deer's metabolism slows down in the winter. If they are fed high-test feed then even that can kill them. Similarly to a cow or horse who colics and dies. People feel the need to help but in the process may hinder nature. Again not sure if this is true or not but something my Dad told me.

Coming home from Edmonchuck last night I saw 4 Cow Elk on the side of HW2 just south of Millet, they were eating an old bale. this was south of a small Elk farm, thought maybe they were escapees but saw no ear tags was going 120Km...

two weeks ago saw the same thing in the same place but only 3 cow Elk..

Yah those Elk are common around there..not escapees but wild ones. There are around 5-6 total I think. They are pretty safe there though...no season for elk in that area. Although the rancher can shoot them with permission from F&W if they "interfere" with his herd (damaging fences, etc.)

They sound as smart as the ones hanging around the boundary of Waterton NP.. THEY KNOW WHERE THE FENCE LINE IS!!!
