I am not sure but I think the species in there is tiny and not worth to catch. If it was worth to catch they would probably add it as a game fish

The stonecat that is found in the Milk River is quite small (<6") and not a game fish. Larger species can be found in MB and BC, though only in a few locations in the latter; namely the Okanogan and lower Fraser.

Montana is probably your closest option, depending on where in AB you are located.

Take a trip to Lockport. It's about 30 minutes north of Winnipeg. 20 plus pounders are a regular catch! Absolutely awesome. You may even get lucky and hook a monster Sturgeon. Go in mid to end June.

i dont think therees any in upper montana but if you go to the okanogan at night theres huge cats we caught lots of 12-16lbers one at the tackle shop had a massive one on a photo.
1 once egg weight slider.
50lb braid
25lb leader flouro
silver
bead
1// circle hook
chunk of stinky bait
Night works best to keep the bass off but still noctorunal.

Stonecats are such a nuisance when I fish in Manitoba... those little suckers can take a goood size circle hook and damn near a whole nightcrawler to the point you have to cut the line. Kids love em though. Some people call them Madtoms. Not to be confused with Bullheads which can also be small

Lockport and the area around St.Norbert are great for channel cats. Tie into a 34+ pounder and fishing here in Alberta will never be the same. Thats what happened to me and I pretty much only fish now on trips to Manitoba and NW Ontario. I have been spoiled.

I agree with Lockport. I was in Winnipeg for work and stopped by the Fishin Hole. Spoke to this really nice guy who set me right up for channel cats. Big spinning rod, circle hooks, and egg sinkers. Use the biggest shrimp you can get from Superstore. Fishing was incredible, especially in the dark. Caught cat fish until I ran out of bait every time I went. Fish were anywhere from 3-30lbs.
Going back this year, not for work, just to fish. Definately worth the drive. More fun than fishing chinooks on the skeena. Way cheaper and the fish are always there.

Yes Lockport is great. 30 lb Channel Cats consistently. Used to catch frogs in the floodway for bait. Or catch a goldeye and cut it up for bait. And yes big shrimp are great too!

put some chicken in a plastic bag and leave in the sun till your dog wont touch it.the catfish can resist.

Thanks for the info. And to reply to the person that commented about my handle/username, I'm from thunder bay Ontario and currently reside in Calgary. My grandfather actually caught the world record for Muskie. Google him "Bob Malo". There is decrepincy about the record thou. Good fishing story, check it out!

A fish that is highly infested with parasites.

Catfish are a parasitologist's dream.

Cook them well.

A good comment but I would add - all fresh water species (including walley etc..) need to be cooked well. As a sushi eater, I have researched this - do not eat any trout, pike, whitefish, etc. ... that come from freshwater unless cooked properly.

P.S. Catfish are awesome eating - hard to beat actally.

X 2 Alberta bigbore . All though there are catfish in the Milk river id sooner fish for Sturgeon then 1 or 2 lb catfish , or take the day drive and spend 3 or 4 days in Manitoba Lockport or st norbert like Alberta bigbore mentioned , I was there 2 years ago and caught some nice cats , and then you can go fish for Muskie and Small mouth bass just south of there aswell.

The last one is of the guide I had hired the original guy I had booked had to bail last minute due to health emergency . But by far Manitoba is the place to go for Channel Cats , I hear that the Flat head cats are even bigger yet , That is definitely a trip in the works maybe next year .

I grew up in Milk River and there are accually some big catfish in there. Not sure what species. We used to chase them around in the shallows when we were kids and try to catch them in garbage bags (Dont ask, and for the record not a very good way to catch anything. lol). Once I seen a dead one on shore at the Gold Springs park that someone caught and just left there. It must have been between 5 - 7 lbs.
