Hello, anybody have one? I've been thinking I should have a generator for quite a while but I'm not quite sure which manufacturer to go with. Kinda nervous of the "made in china" labe. I see Generac is made in the States. Don't know if that's any better, but probably easier to get parts if needed.

Here's the one I'm thinkin'
http://www.homedepot.ca/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CatalogSearchResultView?D=924408&Ntt=924408&catalogId=10051&langId=-15&storeId=10051&Dx=mode+matchallpartial&Ntx=mode+matchall&N=0&Ntk=P_PartNumber

Any thoughts?

I see Princess Auto is handling Generec Generators now. I bought a King at CO-OP in St Paul last year for $900.00. Gas 13 hp 9000 watts no load 7500watts with load. Has 110volt and 220volt. I run my mig welder off it.

I have a United power from Crappy tire and it looks Exactly the same as the Champion, to me they are all made in the same factory in China all they need to do is slap a different color paint on it and call it whatever.

if you want one that last get a honda or Yamaha.

I have a 4400 John Deere for sale. 512 hours, great shape. Nothing runs like a Deere. Paid $1400 for it, yours for $700. Have all documents and owners manual for it, delivered to Pincher Creek. Don't buy a knock off you will regret it. Oil changed faithfully every 50 hours. Never was run hard, just for camping.

I bought a 3000 watt Hyundai at Walmart last year for a decent price. Always starts after a couple of pulls and it's fairly quiet. I used it last fall in -30 degree weather and again this spring and I've had no problems whatsoever. Last fall it powered the furnace fan, space heater and coffee maker without tripping the breaker and under the load of the furnace fan and space heater it was still running after 8 hours. This weekend I went to the trailer and my batteries were dead. Under a light load: lights, furnace, tv and dvd in the evening, and just the furnace fan during the night, it ran for 12 hours before I turned it off. There's nothing saying that it won't fall to pieces the next time out but so far it has impressed me.

Costco's got some sales on right now. I just picked up this guy. ChampionChampion (http://http://www.costco.ca/Browse/Productgroup.aspx?whse=BCCA&topnav=&prodid=10339820&ec=BCCA-EC780-CatHome&pos=15&lang=en-CA)

Should be good enough for me. It's getting some pretty good reviews and for bang for the buck. Yes I realize it's not a yammie or honda, but on RV.net some people have been testing/comparing them, it doesn't have quite the power of Y/H, but it is just as quiet. Perfect for my travel trailer. At least for the amount of times I'll use it.

anyways they had a bunch of the contractor style there also.

We picked up a Champion 3500/3000 in 2007 to use with our trailer, it's seen light use, only 29 hours so far I think but starts usually on the first pull and hasn't given me any grief. Noisier than a honda at idle but not any worse under load the couple of times i've heard them running near each other over the last few years.

If you've got the cash? Buy the honda, you can't argue that they aren't more reliable in the long term. That being said, I think I paid about $400 for mine 4 years ago instead of $3000 so my Champion can break quite a few times before I have to say "I should have bought the Honda"

anybody else have experience with those hyundai's ?
My buddy is looking close at them. He tells me that the 2000 is only 1 decibel louder than the honda. he showed me a pic and it looks similar to the 2kw honda. He tells me there $400 at wally mart?
I told him for that price go for it. Not a big investment.

My wife and I talked it over tonight alot and we've decide we're gonna save our pennies for a while and get a yamaha. It'll take us some time to save enough but it should last forever with the amount we'll use it.

If I'd have seen the one you got it would've been in my shop now.:sad0147:

I reckon you'll be happy with it for a looooong time.

Generic should be fine. Just get one with high wattage and can store many hours of energy.

How much and how many hours?

I held off the generic variety because getting them serviced and finding parts can be a PITA. I bought a Honda EX650 off of a fellow forum member and it runs like a gem. VERY quiet, and at only 57lbs it is very easy to transport.

I believe you should ask yourself these questions if you are going to buy a generator:

-Are you going to use this unit for everyday work?

-Are you going to use this unit for camping? (will noise be an issue?)

-How many hours a year do you intend on running this unit?

Answering these questions should put you in an area of which unit to buy.

Buy Japanese.
(And if you buy a Honda engine, only buy the red and cream color engines, not the black cheapies)

I have owned a Hyundai 2000 si for about 7 months now and have put 446 hours on it so far without much trouble. Just be prepared to change your spark plug every 80 - 110 hours. Another thing that is a bit of a pain is the recoil / pulstart. I've replace mine once and had to re wind it another two times. At least the generator is easy to disassemble (about 8 screws and a fuel line to remove all the platics and electronics). Also a few tips for this generator is remove the fuel filter ( makes it hard to start in winter because of ice crystals) change the oil every 50 hours and install an hour meter to keep track of maintenance schedules.

We install standby power and install Generac generators. We have not a problem ever. Great product.
