Just wanted to post this quickly for the great work and long term commitment my Uncle gave to the Oilers organisation. Although I've never been an Oilers fan, I sure have seen a bunch of the games by simply following Uncle Paul on the televised broadcasts.

30 years and all the Cups worth of history. They are loosing a touch of class!!

Congrats on the career and cheers to a great fellow fisherman!!

Longtime Oilers anthem singer Paul Lorieau will retire after he sings one last time at a home on April 8th.

Lorieau has performed at the old Northlands Coliseum and now Rexall Place for 30 years.

"I think it's time to retire from the scene," Lorieau told CTV News Thursday.

Lorieau became a bit of a rock star while singing the anthems during the Oilers cup run in 2006. It was then that Lorieau created his signature move of sharing his microphone with fans while belting out the anthem.

"I was a little apprehensive at first. I just didn't know how the fans would pick [it] up -- I got the surprise of my life," he said.

Lorieau says he will continue to sing the anthem at the Alberta Legislature.

A special pre-game ceremony will be held to honour Lorieau on April 8th.

He will be missed dearly by Edmonton!!! One of my best memories of Paul is from the 06 run after the Canadian anthem was booed in Anaheim. The first game back in Edmonton he created his trademark move and held the mic high in the air for the crowd to sing the anthem for him. The Vancouver anthem singer still uses this move today!! Very good man!!!!

Correct me if I am wrong but was he not also a Ukrainian Orthodox canter? I am sure he was involved in the canting at my Aunts service.

Could very well be. Our family has a great deal of music history in the both Edmonton and Calgary. My Dad was the founder of the Calgary Opera Association and Paul always had something going on in Edmonton as well.

Didn't know he was your uncle, Mike.
He has sang the anthem for the Oilers every home game since I have been alive. Growing up in the Edmonton area and following the Oilers, he is a legend just like Gretzky, Kuri, Fuhr, Huddy, etc. Yes indeed he will be missed.

It's too bad. He was the last good member the team had. Lol.

In all seriousness I will miss that familiar voice. I wish nothing but good things for him in his future endeavors.
