Well its spring break up for me going on 2 weeks now and for me that means I live out in my shop working on projects that I think up over the winter. Got 2 of them done so far.

The first is a Prawn/Crab trap puller for when we are out on the coast. The cost for a factory built portable runs about $550.00 - $650.00. I started out with a $69.99 1500lb winch from C.T. and $16.00 worth of metal, couple fittings and some paint. Total cost for mine,,, $150.00. I could of built it to fit over my Scotty downrigger mounts but I don't like he idea of that weight pulling on my gunalls so I built it to mount to the transom. I used a Scotty plug end for the power cable and put in an in-line switch. I still have to put a pulley on the end of the boom but I haven't found one I like yet. I am hoping to find a graphite/Teflon pulley won't take long to put it on when I do find one I like. Speed is right around 50'/min so its not bad. Should take under 10 min to bring in 400' of rope.

Couple pics.

What the winch looked like before I started the modification. This was actually the most challenging. A guy had to have it all planned before making any cuts to the spool and making the holes for the spool to run through and the wear bushings without a lathe was challenging but with some ingenuity I was able use use my drill press as a bit of a lathe.

The unit broke down for transport and storage. I am going to get a nice duffle bag to carry it in when not in use.

Then coming in mid April is my 82 year old mothers birthday. She recently moved into a new place and needs some storage room. So I built her this cedar lined chest. Its built with laminated Pine and lined with aromatic cedar tongue and groove.

Nice work. How do you think that winch will do with the salt water exposure? If you are looking for more projects...i have a couple of bathrooms that need remodeling...lol

The motor seems to be sealed pretty good and its not like I live out on the coast it will only be in use out there a few days out of the year and when I do get home my stuff is all washed extensivly with fresh water,, learned that over the years.

Thats an Awesome set up. I had a chance to do some Prawn'n and Crab'n
off the north end of the island last year and had more fun doing that than salmon fishing. I was amazed at how well the winch system worked on the boat I was on. I do beleive that the owner said it was about an $800 option that went on the Scotty rig he had off the side. As one other forum gent said... will two wraps of rope go around the width of the pulley? Thats a key part of the whole set up. You did a real good job on the bracket and finishing . WOW.... great talent. I recall the whole set up banging around on the boat all day so you yah ...... gotta get a soft type storage bag for it.
PS... I am rigging up a windlass anchor system for my boat with he same
winch from CT>.. gotta love that stuff from CHINA !!!!

Enjoy your prawn and crab feasts.......
