Spotted this guy and fired off a couple quick shots. I had owl fever in the first couple shots but regained my composure with the focus to make the kill shot at the end.

If you haven't seen a Short-eared Owl yet, I suggest making a trip out to Beaverhills Lake out by Tofield in the spring/summer. The lake has dried up and left thousands acres of grass where the Owls chow down on voles. Last year I counted 9 in one 180 degree scan of the horizon with my binoculars.

I think they're pretty flighty. Never got close enough to make a positive id, besides the one that had a mouse on the road, coming home, one night. Ran into a lady a while back, who claimed she was stalking a Boreal owl. Not exactly their habitat, around here, is it?

There's about 2 and half feet of snow onthe ground, and the bird pickings are slim. Just a few months though... :)

Get one of those squeaker predator calls used for coaxing Coyotes in that last few yards.

Most Owls will come right to the call. Often they will buzz you a few feet overhead. It's a blast, but makes for some tricky shooting.
