Complete Noob in Edmonton.

Hi,

I'm interested in starting fishing this year, I've been delaying this for years (I bought some of my gear back in 2002 LOL and I have not use it)

I live in Edmonton, I already read the regulations for 2011 plus some info on this forum but wow, its too much info LOL.

I wonder which lakes around Edmonton would you recommend for me to start?

Btw, I'm more interested in catching for eating purposes, that why I want to stay away from NSR (I want to avoid mercury or catching endangered fish).

well, after a bit of research I found two stocked ponds close to where I live.

One is in Beaumont and the other is at Leduc. I also noticed that apparently right in downtown there are two ponds where I can fish too.

Anyways, I just returned from visiting the pond in Beaumont. I could not see much, the place is full of melting snow so I could not walk around. However, the place looks very small.

Does anyone know which place is better to fish?

Beaumont is dead....was there on saturday...dead minnows coming up our holes after we drilled......not looking very good for many of the trout ponds right now....

Like maclennanchris said, many of the stocked ponds are in pretty rough shape...either they've been fished out, winterkilled, or a combination of both.

Give it a month or so until everything has finally opened up and they start to re-stock the ponds and you'll be in good shape :)

Try Morinville reservoir on the West side of the highway , not sure what its like today but use to fish it quite regularly until my other spring spots opened up . Either that or wait until they stock them trout ponds , go practise on the river .

Welcome to the forum.
When it is warmer I usually fish Hermitage park before I go to work. It is a decent enough pond right in the city. Most other ponds worth fishing are in the spruce grove/ stony plain area ( saure,chickakoo,star,spring ...).morinville also seems popular as well as Cardiff just north of saint Albert.

Pick up the Barry Mitchell guide at your local canadian tire store or tackle shop , or for a few more dollars you can get the central Alberta backspace mapbook as it too has some fishing locations listed in it. Good luck and don't be afraid to ask for help here.

Me too! Beaumont was good for me earlier this winter. Never tried leduc. I would love to go this summer sometime with you if you want?

That sounds like a good idea. I should go to the river to practice.

Minnows and worms mostly on a pickerel rig with a decent amount of weight anywhere between 1 ounce and 5 is typicaly nessicary depending on time of year you can catch fish all day long but I've had most of my luck at dawn and dusk not saying you won't catch anything through the day we pretty much all have.

We actually went to Muir Lake today to check it out but it looks very small too.

However, according to the sign at the front, you can only take one fish over 20" and anything smaller than that must be returned.

We will go on early May (it opens May 1).

the place was full of ice, the only open place was where the aerator was.
