I was in Germany for a training course a few years back and on one of the weekends I had the opportunity to go to Dachau (first German concentration camp from which others were modelled after....) was the most sobering experience I have ever had....

I've been to Auschwitz and Birkenau....both are very interesting to tour through. I recommend booking a tour for anyone planning to visit Poland.

Makes you wonder how broken a person must be to do this to another without blinking.

It makes you very thankful for what we have. But very heartbreaking seeing those children in the photos knowing they never even got a chance. Hug your kids extra tight tonight.

The entrance to the gas chambers. I was toured through but photography was not allowed inside. The ovens were also inside this building as well as personal belongings behind glass. Mountains of glasses, shoes and luggage.

........I had the opportunity to go to Dachau (first German concentration camp from which others were modelled after....) was the most sobering experience I have ever had....

I went there in '88 before it was remodeled. Sobering indeed. There were only a few people there that day and several were in tears.

The strangest thing was that for some reason there wasn't a bird flying or landing anywhere in the camp. There was an eerie silence to it that I can't explain except that I could feel the evil if that's at all possible.

True enough ^! My question is; How could a modern civilzed country like Germany stoop to such evil, unspeakable things? I'm at a total loss.

Interesting story there ^ Dave ... Thanks!

We haven't been to Europe in many years, but we plan to go there again this summer. Many places on our list to see (Paris, Berlin, Normandy, Vimy Ridge, etc., ...). And we want to try to fit in Auschwitz as well ... I hear you are never the same after seeing that place.

Yes it was an experience like one I have never had. I have a tonne of pictures as well if anyone is interested I could email them. Some are very graphic. The thing that got me about being there was actually walking through the area with the "showers" and the kilns....can't really describe how that feels....The other thing was there was basically a pit with multi-denominational crosses and a sign that read in German something to the effect of "grave to many unknown". The wall behind the "pit" was peppered with gunfire/bullet marks....

Here is a link of some pics I took in Dachau for those who asked for them. Be warned some of them are a bit graphic.
