So, here's my story. Just had a baby and my wife is on mat leave. The loss of her income (RN) is devastating to our finances. We will shortly be under extreme financial duress if I cannot secure proper employment. I recently graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Commerce in Finance with a minor in Operations Management. I am having extreme difficulty finding employment in my field. I need a job ASAP and one that earns a livable salary (ie 18/hr+). I have no problems doing manual labour and would even consider a career change, however it is challenging to get anyone in those lines of business to consider me. It would be best if I could find work in my field of expertise, but jobs are scarce; either they require experience or pay peanuts. I am looking for FT work in Edmonton (preferably South).

Any leads are greatly appreciated.

Start knocking on the doors of construction companys or landscapes they always are looking for operators and I know operators make pretty good money even to start. I worked at a place in calgary as a mechanic and the operators almost made as much as me and they dont need 30,000 in tools. it could carry you over the summer untill momma gets back to work
Good luck

Send the old lady back to work and become a House husband. My son and his wife are in a similar situation. She's an RN and was making way more money than him. So, they found the best solution was for her to go back to work and he looks after the kids.

Lost my job, came home mad
Got a hug and kiss and that's too bad
She said I can go to work until you find another job
I thought I like the sound of that
Watch TV and take long naps
Go from a hand working dad to being Mr. Mom

Well
Pampers melt in a Maytag dryer
Crayons go up one drawer higher
Rewind Barney for the fifteenth time
Breakfast, six naps at nine
There's bubble gum in the baby's hair
Sweet potatoes in my lazy chair
Been crazy all day long and it's only Monday
Mr. Mom

Football, soccer and ballet
Squeeze in Scouts and PTA
And there's that shopping list she left
That's seven pages long
How much smoke can one stove make
The kids won't eat my charcoal cake
It's more than any man can take
Being Mr. Mom

Well
Pampers melt in a Maytag dryer
Crayons go up one drawer higher
Rewind Barney for the sixteenth time
Breakfast, six naps at nine
There's bubble gum in the baby's hair
Sweet potatoes in my lazy chair
Been crazy all day long and it's only Monday
Mr.Mom

Before I fall in bed tonight
If the dog didn't eat the classifieds
I'm gonna look just one more time

'Cause
Pampers melt in a Maytag dryer
Crayons go up one drawer higher
Rewind Barney for the eighteenth time
Breakfast, six naps at nine
There's bubble gum in the baby's hair
Sweet potatoes in my lazy chair
Been crazy all day long
Oh been crazy all day long and it's only Monday
Mr.Mom

Balancin' checkbooks, juggling bills
Thought there was nothing to it
Baby, now I know how you feel
What I don't know is how you do it

Honey your my hero

If I read your post right, you are going to be in trouble very quickly. Doesn't seem like the right time to hold out for the ideal job.
Find something and jump on it. Getting peanuts is better than starving.

IIRC
Can-elson drilling still has a ad for rig hands in the Edmonton sun.

Erik, read your post with some interest. We operate a chain of retail auto service centres, and are always on the lookout for manager trainees with potential for growth and advancement. No experience necessary, just a good attitude, willingness to learn and a strong work ethic.

If interested, call Andrea at 780-910-8131.
